JOB SUMMARY
The Language Instructor will be responsible for teaching EAL (English as an Additional Language) to adults.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
He/She will be responsible for delivering CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) aligned English Language training for newcomers to Canada according to IRCC established Language Training Outcomes. The Instructor will be responsible for planning lessons that utilize and adapt classroom teaching material. He/She may also be required to complement classroom instruction with appropriate field trips and guest speakers.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develops lesson plans for newcomers to learn English usage for real-world tasks that align with Canadian Language benchmarks.
- Ensures delivery of lessons is in alignment with Language School teaching objectives and funders language training outcomes.
- Teaches in an engaging and effective manner.
- Is respectful of student diversity and needs, and mindful of IRCC Language Training Outcomes.
- Monitors and teaches students in in-person, online, or blended learning environment when applicable.
- Maintains accurate records, including attendance sheets, exit forms and submits reports promptly to ensure students' progress effectively.
- Uses Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA) as directed.
- Communicates client needs and issues to the Administrative Team.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Teacher Lead or Head of Language School.
- Collaborates with Student Councilor and Learning Assistant in order to best serve and support students and meet their learning and settlement needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate should possess the following:

TESL Canada recognized TESL/TESOL certificate or equivalent diploma.

600 hours of ESL teaching experience or a supervised teaching practicum as part of a TESL/TESOL training program OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience acceptable to the employer.

Confirmed proficiency in English. Confirmation can be provided by a minimum of one of the following:
- English Language as a first language.
- Completion of a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an English-speaking country where the program was taught in English; or
- A minimum TOEFL score of 550; or
- A minimum IELTS score of 6.5

Knowledge of local community resources for newcomers to Canada.

Classroom teaching experience with adult newcomers to Canada.

Experience working in a multicultural and diverse environment.
JOB SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in use of computer programs including Microsoft Office; including: Teams, Word, and Excel.
- Experience with LMS (Learning Management System) would be an asset.
- Proficient in the use of internet and other computer-based technology in the classroom.
- Familiar with use of typical office and classroom equipment (including smartboard & smart screen technology).
- Able to work independently within a team environment.
- Able to create and sustain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Able to foster independent learning.
- Able to identify when a learner needs learning assistance and know how to respond appropriately.
- Understanding the basic principles of crisis management in the classroom.
- Organized and excellent time-management.
