Department Recreation & Culture Affiliation Non-Union Compensation Range $22.97 - $24.97 Job Summary Under the direct supervision of the Community Recreation Coordinator, the Preschool Instructor is accountable for the planning, preparation, implementation and evaluation of assigned classes in the preschool area. Job Duties Include Implements a safe, enjoyable and diversified preschool program as developed in coordination with the Community Recreation Coordinator. Acts as on-site team leader with 1-2 preschool assistants. Plans and delivers programs to meet the needs of the community in keeping with corporate philosophies, policies, and procedures. Develops, plans and implements special events, themes, and special guests. Develops, implements, and maintains an 8–12 week high quality program plan for preschool classes as outlined in each course description. Promotes an environment of safety and respect among participants (co-operation, sharing, positive behaviour, etc.) using a variety of behaviour management techniques. Promotes individual growth in developmental areas appropriate to participant age and ability (fine/gross motors skills, speech, etc.). Maintains ongoing effective communications with parents, public, co-workers and supervisor. Ensures the effective administration of behaviour management techniques when dealing with participant issues. Takes appropriate action to deal with incidents, problems and emergencies, as outlined in the departmental/corporate policies and procedures. Ensures effective public relations and problem solving as necessary. Ensures the safety and well-being of all participants during program hours. Prepares all teaching aids, program supplies & equipment required for each class. Maintains supplies and equipment inventory necessary to operate the program; monitor any facility concerns or unsafe equipment and communicate any problems to the Community Recreation Coordinator. Manages concerns, complaints or suggestions about the program from parents and public in a professional manner and informs the Community Recreation Coordinator; ensures stakeholders are informed. Qualifications/Skills College Diploma or University Degree in Early Childhood Education or combination of training, education and experience deemed equivalent. Minimum 2 years’ experience working with pre-school aged children. Knowledge and experience related to the delivery of recreational programs. Excellent organization, time management and planning skills. Self-motivated, positive, confident and approachable. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Respectful of diverse opinions and perspectives. Willing to share information with others and to solicit input. Committed to quality customer service. Strong oral and written communication skills. Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C certification (If hired, must be obtained by March 7, 2026). Able to provide a current Criminal Reference Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) that is satisfactory to the Town (dated within last 6 months). Must be available to work the full week of March Break (March 16 - 20, 2026) including mandatory training dates (Orientation, BMST, March Break Training). Nice to Have HIGH FIVE – Principles of Healthy Child Development certification is an asset.
