Are you a dedicated and experienced Transportation Materials Delivery Engineer looking to make a significant impact? The Transportation Materials Engineering group is seeking a professional to support their vital work in pavement design, field reviews, and the development and maintenance of construction standards. In this role, you will apply your engineering expertise to provide specialized support for capital projects, act as a subject matter expert, and contribute to the Complete Street Design and Construction Guidelines. You will also be involved in specification review, construction field support, and the assessment of new products and methods, all while upholding the highest professional standards in accordance with the City’s Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) and APEGA standards.
What will you do?
Provide specialist engineering project support and subject matter expertise for pavements (flexible and rigid), materials, and construction engineering design, focusing on detailed design, delivery, and post-construction phases
Review pavements (flexible and rigid), materials, and construction information
Offer information, advice, and engineering review of reports, designs, construction drawings, and specifications to manage risk and provide value-added engineering services
Perform engineering analysis and prepare authenticated and validated technical reports
Utilize mature engineering knowledge and sound technical judgment to provide specialist advice and input to projects, programs, and initiatives
Actively work to improve specifications related to Transportation Materials and Construction within the scope of practice
Interact with internal and external partners impacted by specification updates and apply appropriate City standards and policies
Handle requests for deviations from standards and provide authenticated and validated professional work products when required
Draft and review special provisions applicable to transportation materials
Support the review of mix designs for concrete and asphalt to ensure alignment with City specifications
Review new product requests, ensuring alignment with City Plan and strategic goals, and support the implementation and monitoring of trials
Provide specialist engineering field support during pre-construction, construction, and inspection for roads and other infrastructure projects, including troubleshooting materials and construction issues
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized University
Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA, in good standing. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
Minimum 7 years progressively responsible experience in Civil Engineering directly related to pavements, materials and construction
Assets:
Experience and knowledge in pavement design
Experience with GIS, AutoCAD
Good understanding of standards and specifications such as AASHTO, ASTM, CSA etc.
Practical experience with design, construction and monitoring of Low Impact Development (LID) infrastructure
Skills required for success:
Demonstrated advanced specialization in the knowledge and practical application of roadway pavement materials
Good knowledge of pavement standards, including the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction Standards
Proven planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills, along with OH&S Knowledge
Experience, knowledge and ability to make sound engineering decisions in the field
Strong verbal and written communication, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills, with an ability to develop strategic relationships and deliver collaborative work

Up to: 1 permanent full-time position
Hours of work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday
Salary: $109,387.76 - $136,733.74 (Annually)
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
This position is eligible for the EDO program (Earned Day Off)
Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business
Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement
