About the Role:
Global News is seeking an exceptional National Online Journalist to join our team in Toronto or Ottawa, contributing to our national website GlobalNews.ca. This is a 12-month maternity leave contract.
We’re looking for a journalist with a demonstrated ability to break stories, respond quickly to developing news, and consistently exercise strong editorial judgments especially on consumer and general-interest topics.
The ideal candidate thrives under tight deadlines, excels at distilling complex information into clear and compelling stories, and can easily pivot between assignments.
A strong understanding of editorial balance and accuracy in reporting is essential.
In this dynamic role, you’ll seamlessly move between filing breaking news for GlobalNews.ca and pitching original, consumer-driven pieces and general-interest explainers on topics ranging from health and politics to current affairs. You’ll be at the center of emerging stories while leveraging the national reach of Global’ s multiplatform network, all with a focus on accountability, the public interest, and anticipating the stories Canadians will be discussing next.
This position reports to the Managing Editor, Digital and Breaking News, and may be based in Toronto or Ottawa.
It is classified as a Group 2 position under the current collective agreement.
You'll be working on things like:
Pitching, developing, and executing daily assignments for GlobalNews.ca.
Being first on the news team in the morning, helping to set the news agenda each day for the national online team.
Participating in editorial meetings, fostering an environment of collaboration, creativity, debate and positive feedback.
Working with a variety of national and network stakeholders to put Global News reporting at the top of the national conversation.
Working collaboratively with a national team of online, radio and television journalists to adapt Global News stories across different platforms.
If you have the following... we want to hear from you!:
Diploma/Degree in Journalism/Broadcasting or equivalent experience.
Minimum of 2 years of experience reporting.
Highly functioning in online news and bringing a conversational voice to writing.
Experience with the fast-paced environment of a wire service or comparable digital platform in building a breaking news file is an asset.
Proven track record of impeccable storytelling, impeccable editorial judgment, and a proven ability to make fast, editorially solid decisions in a high-pressure environment.
Proven experience in diverse and inclusive storytelling.
In-depth knowledge of national and current affairs across the country
A role model who sets high editorial and ethical standards and represents best journalistic practices including adherence to journalistic principles and practices as they relate to conduct on social media
Proven track record of fair, balanced, impartial reporting, along with excellent communication, organizational and multitasking skills.
Ability to adapt to ever-changing workflows and technologies.
An amazing attitude that will inspire, engage and motivate colleagues.
French language skills will be considered an asset.
Political reporting experience will be considered an asset.
