Intern, Operational Technology (OT) Safety System Design
This is a full-time summer internship lasting from May 11, 2026, until August 28, 2026.
Job Summary
The Intern, Operational Technology (OT) System Safety Engineering is responsible for supporting the control or reduction of railway safety risks introduced by technology. Tasks include performing safety assessments, including hazard analysis and fault tree analysis as part of the design and implementation of new technologies. The incumbent may also be required to assess the root cause of technology failures that lead to safety incidents. The role is performed under the supervision of the System Safety Expert. The System Safety Engineering employees have comprehensive rail operation and system engineering backgrounds. The team’s focus is to ensure that the safety technology deployed into CN’s operation reliably performs its safety functions. Moreover, the team analyzes consequences of random or systemic failures that have operational safety impacts and work with design teams to eliminate or reduce them.
Main Responsibilities
Work with a System Safety Expert to scope a safety analysis required as part of a release or technology program
Familiarize with analysis techniques through review of standards, documentation and coaching
Perform analysis and review the conclusions with a System Safety Expert
Present findings to colleagues in Architecture or Design to strengthen the design
Requirements
Interest in railway and the application of technology in the railway environment
Basic knowledge of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS), or system safety engineering principles
Basic knowledge of system engineering principles
Knowledge of sound technology fundamentals
Education
Working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering
