Reporting to the VP, International Taxation and Transfer Pricing, this role will provide expert guidance on international tax matters, ensure compliance with evolving international tax regulations, and support business initiatives with strategic tax advice. This role requires strong technical expertise in the international tax regulatory landscape, thought leadership, and the ability to collaborate across functions and geographies to ensure effective execution of multi-geographical initiatives in alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements. The role will be responsible for tax planning, providing risk assessment and tax advice to stakeholders across CIBC with a focus on strategic initiatives, including reorganizations and establishing operations in new jurisdictions. How you'll succeed International Tax Delivery- Deliver specialized advice, planning and solutions on a broad range of international tax matters impacting CIBC and its Strategic Business Units. Lead the implementation of multi-functional cross-border strategic initiatives, tax due diligence and structuring for market entry, acquisitions, and reorganizations in new jurisdictions. Assess and manage permanent establishment (PE) risks for cross‑border activities (including services and dependent agent scenarios), recommend branch vs. subsidiary structures, coordinate with employment tax and mobility implications to avoid unintended PEs. Design capital structures for foreign entities that balance regulatory, funding, and tax objectives, including development of repatriation strategies (dividends, returns of capital, share redemptions, interest, royalties) that optimize returns, considering exempt/taxable surplus, foreign tax credits, withholding tax, and FX impacts. Advise on non‑resident withholding tax implications for dividends, interest, royalties, services, and guarantee fees. Stakeholder Management- Co-ordinate among various stakeholders and collaborate with transfer pricing, indirect tax and compliance teams across CIBC on matters including: transfer pricing for inter-company financing, guarantees, inter-company services, and intangibles; indirect tax considerations for foreign operations and integration with pricing and billing processes; accurate and timely Canadian outbound compliance for cross‑border transactions and foreign affiliates (e.g., T1134/T106 filings), and coordination with local tax registrations, returns, and information reporting in relevant jurisdictions. Planning and Compliance- Lead Canadian foreign affiliate regime planning and compliance, including surplus tracking (exempt, taxable, hybrid surplus), FAPI analysis and mitigation, upstream loans, and ACB adjustments on FA shares and reorganizations. Manage audits and disputes relating to cross‑border matters; pursue APAs/MAP where appropriate and coordinate strategy with local advisors and tax authorities to resolve controversies efficiently. Provide proactive stakeholder education on international tax developments affecting foreign operations and translate technical changes into actionable business guidance. Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, external advisors, and tax authorities. Stay abreast of changes in international tax legislation and administrative practices, proactively assessing their impact on CIBC and communicating relevant updates to stakeholders. Represent CIBC in industry forums and advocate for the bank’s interests in tax policy discussions. Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the international tax function. Who you are You can demonstrate experience. 10 or more years of Canadian international tax work experience with a specialization in outbound taxation. Exposure to the financial services industry is as an asset however, consideration will be given to candidates who have a strong interest and desire to learn the financial services business. You are a certified professional. Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation (preferably CPA, CA) or Master’s degree in Taxation, tax law, or related field, or a tax lawyer. Completed Levels I and II of the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Course. Completion of the In-depth International Tax course is preferred. Strong presentation/ business interaction skills. Excellent research and analysis. Advanced problem-solving skills and ability to implement the solutions. Results-oriented, self-motivated, proactive and proven ability to work independently.
