Your Role:
Reporting to the Chef De Cuisine, the Cook will support the Food Services Department by providing assistance in the preparation of food in the kitchen, as well as by serving food to students and patrons of Currie Hall.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide assistance to the Chef de Cuisine/ Chef de Partie as required through the participation in all Kitchen production activities as they relate to the service of meals, salads, snacks and catering
Prepare meals independently during designated shifts, ensuring consistency, quality, and adherence to established menus and dietary guidelines
Respond accurately to all special dietary requirements and allergies
Serve patrons of Currie Hall by communicating daily fare and dishing out portions as per established guidelines
Replenish supplies by monitoring and keeping track of usage and keeping Chef de Cuisine /Chef de Partie informed of any issues such as out of stock items, possible shortages and waste
Assist with receiving, unloading and the putting away of food items when deliveries arrive
Maintain a clean and safe work environment by, keeping serving areas and kitchens clean and sanitary by putting excess food away, clearing away waste, doing the dishes, and by following instructions regarding cleanliness and sanitation at all time
Assist with dishwashing as needed to support overall kitchen workflow and maintain operational efficiency
Perform other duties as required to contribute to the team effort and achieve the objectives of the Food Services Department
All other duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
High School diploma or equivalent
Food Safety Handling Certificate is required; Knowledge of food safety standards
Minimum two (2) years of experience in service/general help in a professional kitchen
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced kitchen environment
Excellent knife skills and basic knowledge of nutrition
Excellent customer service skills
Ability to anticipate customer needs and recommend appropriate substitutions as required
Ability to execute instructions accurately through good organization and attention to detail
Good communication skills
Knowledge of food service procedures and various food allergies/intolerances
Strong knowledge of proper food handling practices, food preparation and handling of all foods and leftovers
Proficiency in washing, peeling, cutting and seeding fruits and vegetables
Good understanding of sanitation and cleanliness issues with respect to the kitchen, service area and cafeteria
Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
