The Department of Anthropology is concerned with the unity and diversity of humanity, human culture, and society from comparative and global perspectives. Members of our department have consistently included distinguished anthropologists of international renown, and continually provide research in a wide range of areas. Your Opportunity:
Reporting to the Chair, the Department Manager has administrative responsibility in support of the academic and research missions of the Department by providing leadership and management of the financial, human, physical, and information technology resources for the Department of Anthropology. The Manager is responsible for the effective management of financial resources including practicing saving and revenue strategies, forecasting budgetary requirements, the development and management of the operating budget , and administration of operating accounts, trust funds and research grants. Oversees management, maintenance and upgrading of the Department’s physical resources and assets and coordinates projects and resolves health and safety concerns and implements requirements.
The Department Manager leads and motivates administrative staff members and manages human resources functions including assignment of work, hiring, performance management, and professional development of staff. The Manager participates in the resolution of grievances from CUPE 3209 Unit 1 and Unit 3, and USW unions and works to resolve informal complaints in consultation with Labour Relations and Human Resources. The Manager oversees departmental operations and broad management initiatives and works with the Chair to develop departmental strategic plans in alignment with the goals of the Faculty and the University and ensures administrative practices are in compliance with University policies and guidelines.
Education:
Experience:
- Minimum of five (5) years’ relevant progressive experience in financial management and administration in a similar environment.
- Demonstrated experience in financial management, including budget management and forecasting.
- Experience building and developing effective administrative systems and processes.
- Experience applying and interpreting policies and procedures pertaining to budget, finance, research grant, human resources, academic administration.
- Experience leading and motivating others; experience supervising staff in a unionized environment is an asset.
- Experience with the University’s budget model, academic and financial policies, procedures, guidelines, systems, and structure is highly desirable.
Skills:
- Advanced computer skills including in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams), SharePoint or equivalent.
- Strong skills with the Administrative Management System (AMS), including the Financial Information System (FIS), and Human Resources Information System (HRIS), or similar information systems.
Others:
- Demonstrated strong leadership in all areas of departmental operations, including excellent administrative, financial, and staff management skills.
- Excellent service-oriented style, responsive to the needs of the Department, consultative with the ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff, students, internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to manage proactively, set priorities, to manage competing deadlines and a variety of complex projects simultaneously; excellent time management and organizational skill, adaptable to changing priorities
- Demonstrated knowledge of collective agreement interpretation and human resources policies and procedures and labour, employment standards, health and safety, and sound management practice.
- Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with regards to facilities and space needs, including office, teaching and research and space management.
- Demonstrated ability to assess department IT needs and liaise effectively with internal and external sources to meet the Department’s needs.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, skilled at delivering effective presentations.
- Excellent analytical, problem solving and financial skills with ability to interpret and apply information and provide financial analysis.
- Demonstrated success in the development of and implementation of process improvements, and initiatives.
- Demonstrated judgment and decision-making employing both tact and negotiation skills and ability to apply these skills for achieving informal complaint resolution and through the grievance process.
- Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment, discretion and confidentiality in dealing with highly sensitive information.
