Since 1965, the Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources has brought together professors from many different disciplines and departments at the University of Toronto to teach and conduct research on all aspects of the workplace and employment relationships. The CIRHR faculty reflects the depth, breadth, and diversity of our university. The CIRHR is located in a historic home with administrative and faculty offices, an on-site Library, student computer facilities, study space and a classroom.
Your opportunity:
This project is a multi-year initiative titled “Transforming Workplace Systems to Build Sustainable Capacity for Inclusion of Diverse Youth,” funded by Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS). Administered through the University of Toronto’s Centre for Industrial Relations & Human Resources (CIRHR), this project aims to build employer capacity for barrier-free, disability-inclusive workplaces, particularly in the construction and manufacturing sectors. It prioritizes support for youth with disabilities (specifically those with neurodivergence, intellectual disabilities, or mental health challenges) through systems-level innovations, cross-sector collaboration, and the development of scalable tools, platforms, and frameworks.
Under the general guidance of the Project Manager, the Special Events Coordinator & Content Writer plays a key role in supporting the YESS initiatives. This position is responsible for planning and executing special events and outreach initiatives, including conceptualizing event themes, managing logistics, liaising with vendors and stakeholders, and promoting programs to target audiences. The incumbent also develops and manages strategic communications by creating original content, writing news and feature stories, and producing marketing materials across print, web, and social media platforms. Additional responsibilities include maintaining event calendars, coordinating website updates, implementing social media campaigns, and ensuring alignment with branding and communication objectives. The position requires strong organizational, writing, and interpersonal skills to deliver high-quality events and content that advance the research priorities.
Your responsibilities will include:

EssentialQualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in marketing, communications, journalism, event management, or a related field, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum four years of recent and relevant experience implementing special programming, events, digital communication programs, website activities, and social media programs for research advancement, partner relations, and external liaison.
- Demonstrated a full cycle of experience with planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating events, workshops, symposiums, and seminars for internal and external stakeholders, aiming to increase the initiative's presence.
- Experience in promoting programs such as donation campaigns, mentorship programs, and other service offerings to internal and/or external contacts
- Demonstrated experience with communications project implementation and coordination through to execution and results.
- Experience with interviewing, researching, and writing articles (feature and news), annual reports, letters, and promotional and public relations material (websites, brochures, posters, advertisements, newsletters, etc.).
- Experience managing and writing content for websites, and newsletters.
- Demonstrated experience and understanding of social and multimedia strategies, tools, channels, trends, and capabilities
- Experience in working with research groups, especially in employment and inclusive workplaces is an asset.
- Strong skills in working with WordPress and Drupal or other current content management software (CMS).
- Strong problem solving skills and ability to deal with a variety of responsibilities, with interruptions.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- Project implementation skills and knowledge about the principles of good design and how to assess audience needs
- Proven journalistic skills, including investigating and pitching stories, executing interviews, and writing news and feature stories.
- Exceptional proofreading and editing skills with working knowledge of graphic design principles for web and print communication
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and ability to prepare and remediate digital documents to ensure full compliance with accessibility standards such as AODA or WCAG 2.1AAA
- Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, with demonstrated ability to establish positive working relationships at levels
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at the same time. Excellent time management skills with the ability to meet strict and competing deadline
Assets (Nonessential):
- Experience working with mixed-method and multidisciplinary research environments is an advantage.
- Experience editing, retouching, and optimizing images for web and print publishing.
- Experience editing HD and UHD videos (ability to create simple animations for intros/outros and adding these to the video, editing/adding soundtracks, reducing noise, cropping/combining video clips).
