Description:
Research Associate position in the area of chemical recovery and wastewater treatment in kraft pulp mills is available at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, University of Toronto. This position is a part of industrial research projects within the Pulp and Paper Centre.
Qualifications:
The position requires a PhD in a scientific field and ideally at least 2 years of experience working on projects related to the pulp and paper industry. University of Toronto is a highly competitive employer and compensation will be commensurate with experience of the candidate.
Preference given to candidates with experience with:
Strong background in the process chemistry of the pulp and paper industry or anaerobic processes relevant to wastewater and sludge digestion.
Duties:
- Conceiving hypothesis, designing experimental plans and conducting experiments and analyzing and interpreting data
- Reviewing scientific literature, executing research projects and reporting on their progress through oral and written reports and scientific journal articles
- Communicating effectively orally and in writing
- Presenting research at local, national and international meetings
- Coordinating research projects and meetings
- Interfacing with industry partners and vendors effectively
- Calibrating and performing routine maintenance of specific equipment, and training other researchers and providing technical support for these equipment
- Developing new techniques and methods and training other researchers in these techniques
- Maintaining sample databases
- Assisting the PI in preparing manuscripts and proposals.
- Assisting and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students
- Performing other additional duties to enable the safe and efficient operation of the lab
- Field studies as part of translating the research to the industry

- This is a 1-year term position with the possibility of renewal.
