Job Description: Position Purpose summary: This position is mostly focused on providing required sanitation, cleaning, and custodial service to custodial standards ensuring the building environment is healthy and comfortable in compliance with applicable standards and policies. Accountabilities: The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties. 1. Custodial (85%): Cleans, sanitizes, sweeps, dusts, mops, washes, vacuums, polishes, and waxes floors. Cleans windows, mirrors, woodwork, furniture, equipment, and other surfaces. Cleans/washes walls and ceilings. Cleans washroom facilities. Cleans, dusts, mops offices, common areas, and other rooms i.e. storage rooms, sanctuary and vacuums carpeted areas including carpet spot-cleaning and general c\cleaning, as required. Supplies toilet paper, paper towels, soap, and other hygiene items. Empties garbage and recycling bins and disposing their respective bins outside of the building. Cleans, sterilizes and/or disinfects areas and equipment before and after each use. Cleans interior of the program vehicle and performs basic maintenance i.e. fill windshield washer fluid. Where applicable, ensures kitchen cleanliness in partnership with Community Service staff. Performs more extensive cleaning, stripping and waxing floors, and light maintenance: during non-peak programming periods. Organizes and maintains janitorial supplies in janitorial room(s). Monitors and maintains stock of regularly used items, i.e., mops, brooms, lights, cleaning supplies etc., and orders/purchases as required. Informs Supervisor of general repairs and/or maintenance. Performs minor repairs such as electrical (change light bulbs) and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues), wall patch-painting, light furniture repair/maintenance (tighten screws) reports safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor. Performs monthly fire extinguisher check and ensures that annual inspections are completed for all fire suppression equipment including those located in program vehicles. Follows established procedures and record keeping for inventory tracking. Lifts and moves furniture as requested. Complies with all prescribed sanitation and building disinfecting protocols. Checks doors and windows to ensure building security. Assists with the assembly, distribution and retrieval of fundraising assets i.e., Christmas Kettles, EDS Freezers. Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks, entrances, emergency exits are clear of snow and ice, including salting, grass cutting and trimming, raking leaves, and picking up garbage. Set up for events i.e., program events such as bible study, worship services, memorials, weddings, community meals, or Christmas Assistance activities. 2. Administrative and General Duties (8%): Works independently or cooperatively with team members to complete tasks on schedule and according to quality standards. Attend meetings as requested by the Corps Officer(s). Attends specialized work training (onsite and/or offsite) when scheduled. Assist with Corporate visa reconciliation. Send and answer email and use HRIS system(s) i.e., Workday. 3. Other Duties (7%): Collect, store, and occasionally transport returnable recycling materials to a designated drop off site and return the cash to administrative staff. Put out Christmas Kettles. Provide support in picking up for toys and freezers during Christmas Campaign. Pick up supplies for the role i.e., cleaning supplies etc. once required. Assist with pick-up of donated materials/goods. Oversee preventative maintenance of program vehicles (MVI, oil change, seasonal tire changes, vehicle registration). Performs other work-related duties as assigned. Health and Safety Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling. Contribute to the overall safety of staff, volunteers, donors, clients, and guests. CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Internal: Team Members in program, Ministry Unit managers and staff, residents, and clients External: Vendors, suppliers, service providers. MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY: Reports directly to: Corps Officer(s) Direct reports: None FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Minor material responsibility Occasional limited, routine financial tasks assigned by the supervisor such as basic purchases or handling minimal cash amounts from bottle return funds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work environment is typically at the facility in generally agreeable conditions. Some duties (i.e., groundskeeping, pickups and deliveries) is performed outdoors. The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, reaching, bending, twisting, lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills. Requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals and using non motorized/general cleaning equipment. Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds. Handles garbage and cleans up human waste and biohazard substances. Odours, exposure to toxic chemicals, electrical hazards, and infectious diseases. Deals with aggressive people. May experience verbal, and less likely, physical attacks. Risk of needle pricks, back injuries, and repetitive strain injuries. Works in various weather conditions when working outdoors. Education and experience Qualifications: Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities. Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures. Education, Qualifications and Certifications: High School Diploma or Equivalency. Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean abstract Class 4 considered an asset. Willingness to obtain a class 4 driver’s license. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements At least two years of prior cleaning experience and at least six months of experience leading a cleaning team. Experience driving large commercial vehicles is considered an asset. Skills and Capabilities: Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $15.65 to $18.59 with a maximum of $22.31. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
