Community Connector - Capitol Hill Community Association
Start Date: January 16 or February 2 Location: Community-based Wage: $26/hr
Hours per week: Up to 30 hours per week Term: Until December 31, 2026
Community Connectors will play a vital role on the Community Development Learning Initiative (CDLI) Building Connected Communities (BCC) team, working directly with designated community host organizations and their members to strengthen connections within Calgary neighbourhoods. The primary role of a Community Connector is to engage with people, foster connections, and help identify local strengths, opportunities, and resources. They will collaborate with the CDLI BCC team, host organizations and community members to enhance connection within the communities involved in the BCC project. Community Connectors will learn about, engage with and practice Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) and anti-racism and decolonization throughout the project implementation and developmental evaluation, with the goal of building more connected communities in Calgary.
This role is offered in partnership with Capitol Hill Community Association, with the successful candidate working directly within this partner’s organization. Applications will be reviewed by both the community host organization, and Carya to ensure a strong fit for the role and community. As a community connector, a deep understanding of and connection to the community host organization is essential, as you will play a key role in building relationships and fostering local engagement.
ABOUT THE COMMUNITY HOST ORGANIZATION
Capitol Hill is an established community in northwest Calgary. Its community association (CHCA) is a volunteer-run organization committed to fostering a sense of belonging by engaging and connecting residents through programs and events. A huge driver with CHCA is supporting a neighbourhood where people know one another and feel they can contribute to their community. Additionally, we steward a well-used facility and park space at 1531 21 Avenue NW.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Build Trust and Relationships in Community
- Foster relationships and build trust by engaging with community members and residents, both collaboratively and independently.
- Organize and facilitate project specific community gatherings to bring residents together and create opportunities for connection.
- Using the ABCD framework, identify existing skills, strengths, resources, and assets within the community host organization to help leverage local opportunities.
- Make connections between people from diverse backgrounds to strengthen community bonds.
- Actively finding ways to reduce barriers for participation, ensuring everyone has multiple ways and opportunities to engage.
- Promote community care, inclusivity and diversity in all community efforts, creating a welcoming and accessible environment for all.
Facilitate Community Connection
- Coordination of meaningful conversations with community members to learn about their interests in participating in local community initiatives.
- Connect the interests and skills identified by community participants with existing assets, resources and supports.
- In collaboration with the community host organization; plan, guide, and support outreach activities to consistently engage community members in dialogue, ensuring all voices are heard on issues that matter to the community.
- Assist in planning, organizing, conducting, and facilitating activities such as community conversation circles, and other engagement opportunities aligning with the ABCD framework.
- Collaborate with local participants to create or strengthen community-based events and activities that foster connection and growth.
- Identify and invite community members to opportunities for growth and empowerment, enhancing individuals' capacity, participation, or leadership skills in local initiatives.
- Offer a safe and inclusive space for individuals to gather, learn, share knowledge, and build their skills alongside their peers in the community.
Contribute to Project Tracking and Evaluation
- Collect data related to community engagement, connections, outcomes, challenges, and success stories.
- Tracking and reporting quantitative data to Community Connector Coordinators, ensuring accurate documentation of community activities and project specific expenditures.
Engage in Team Building and Learning Opportunities
- Attend regular team meetings with the community host organization and BCC team.
- Attend trainings and in-person gatherings focused on Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) and skill building for increasing community connections.
- Share your learnings with your community host organization and invite community members to attend learning opportunities provided by CDLI and the BCC team.

WHAT YOU BRING
- A keen desire to listen, learn and act for the benefit of community connection.
- Experience engaging with community groups in various settings.
- Some background of community engagement education and/or lived experience is an asset.
- Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Office 365 and Google Drive.
- Good oral and written communication skills in English, other languages are an asset
- The ability to work flexible hours, including Wednesday (day-time), and including some evenings and weekends.
