Our Registered Practical Nurses develop and practice their skills in caring for stroke and Neurology patients in the acute phase of stroke care. Our unique care model provides opportunities for enhanced continuity of patient care through a specialized unit dedicated to the management of Stroke and Neurology patients with dynamic and strong interdisciplinary teams. As a member of the healthcare team in this unique model of care, the Registered Practical Nurse uses a client centered approach to patient care and provides nursing care within the Registered Practical Nurse scope of practice and the Canadian Best Practice Recommendations for Stroke Care.
Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse
Current Medication Administration and Asepsis certificates
Current certificates or current Community College studies in asepsis, wound care, airway management, complex wound care, patient assessment, urinary catheterization, administering enteral feeds, IV administration, venipuncture, and management, transcribing physician orders
Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification or equivalent
Completion of Physical Assessment Course
Minimum 2 years, recent experience in an acute adult medical/surgical unit, preferably with Stroke/Neurology patients
Completion of the telemetry pathway of Critical Practice Orientation (CPO) training or ability to complete this CPO training offered by HHS (ECG interpretation and monitoring for telemetry)
Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, high turnover environment
Demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
Demonstrates critical thinking and decision making in assessment, problem identification and problem solving
Ability to prioritize and collaborate with the team when the patients conditions change
Willingness to participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and innovation
Evidence of commitment to professional practice and ongoing professional development
