This posting is for a part-time Research Assistant 1 position in the Shared Reality Lab in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. It is six months position, with the possibility of renewal.
Position Summary:
The Shared Reality Lab conducts research in audio, video, and haptic technologies, building systems that leverage their capabilities to facilitate and enrich both human-computer and computer-mediated human-human interaction. The lab is part of the Centre for Intelligent Machines and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of McGill University. McGill, one of Canada's most prestigious universities, is located in Montreal, a top city to live in, especially for students.
We are seeking a versatile and motivated Research Assistant to support research and development in the Shared Reality Lab's (SRL) core focuses, in particular related to multimodal displays in high-consequence environments. The RA will also contribute to technical communication, including website content and infrastructure.
Key responsibilities include:
• Conduct and support research in one or more of the Shared Reality Lab's activities, including human-computer interaction (HCI), haptics, accessible technology, spatial audio, and/or mixed reality systems.
• Identify, frame, and pursue novel research questions in alignment with ongoing SRL initiatives, defining and conducting self-directed investigations where appropriate.
• Evaluate research prototypes and/or existing solutions and assist in drafting, designing and implementing novel solutions.
• Engage across multiple concurrent research streams and identify opportunities for synthesis, collaboration, and innovation across projects.
• Collaborate closely with graduate students and stakeholders, and contribute to ongoing initiatives in accessibility and inclusive design.
• Maintain, update, design, and develop lab-related website and web content, including publications, team updates, and media.
• Author technical documentation, research papers, and/or research findings.
• Assist in writing grant applications or research proposals, if required.
• Take on additional development tasks on an as-needed basis that align with lab priorities and emerging needs.
Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree required.
Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:
We are seeking a motivated, intellectually curious, and engaging individual who is excited to contribute to research that sits at the intersection of technology, design, and inclusion. The successful candidate will work on interdisciplinary projects involving human-computer interaction, accessible technology, and haptics while also assisting in maintaining and updating the lab's online presence. This role is ideal for someone who is both technically skilled and research-oriented, capable of switching contexts fluidly, and eager to explore how multiple projects can intersect and inform one another.
Requirements:
• Degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Engineering, Design, or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following: haptic interfaces, spatial audio, AR/VR systems, interaction design, or assistive devices.
• Familiarity with inclusive design principles and accessibility standards.
• Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, JavaScript, Typescript, C , HTML/CSS) and web content management.
• Experience conducting user-centered design or usability studies.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to write clearly for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.
• Quebec resident (mandatory).
• Bonus: Experience working on grant-funded projects or academic research labs
• Bonus: Graphic design or visual communication skills (e.g., Figma, Adobe Suite).
• Bonus: Experience writing conference and journal papers and presenting results in academic venues
