Job Overview
The Manufacturing Process Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency, quality, and productivity in the company's production environment. This role applies engineering principles and practical problem-solving to optimize assembly and manufacturing operations, ensuring products are manufactured to high-quality standards cost-effectively and efficiently.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Analyze current assembly and fabrication processes and develop and implement new and improved processes to optimize throughput.
- Manage process improvement projects from start to finish to optimize assembly operations, reduce build times, de-bottleneck production, and increase profitability.
- Measure production build times and create benchmarks for each product.
- Improve efficiency by optimizing workflow, spatial requirements, and plant layout.
- Identify and address inefficiencies within production and manufacturing, minimize waste, and drive cost savings in manufacturing processes.
- Design tools and jigs as required to improve process flow.
- Assist in the creation of SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
- Coordinate prototype and production runs.
- Develop and maintain a risk-based approach to assess operational performance (safety, production, quality, and cost).
- Leverage data to identify and prioritize improvement opportunities, prepare improvement project proposals, and conduct cost-benefit analyses.
- Facilitate the change management process and coach key stakeholders through the process improvement initiatives.
- Work closely with Operations, Fabrication, Engineering, Assembly, IT, Supply Chain, and QC to ensure proper communication and technical consultation.
- Provide hands-on assistance in modernization initiatives such as automation, advanced control systems, predictive analytics, and artificial intelligence.
- Work closely with operational leaders to drive operational excellence and sustain the benefits from improvement projects.
- Conduct formal or informal training in process improvement and operational excellence methodologies, such as Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.
Qualifications
- 5 years of experience as a Manufacturing/Process Engineer
- Post-secondary education in an engineering-related discipline
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and production methods.
- Ability to perform root cause analysis and troubleshoot complex production issues.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to apply data-driven decision-making.
- Knowledge of automation systems and manufacturing technology, including robotics, CNC machinery, and advanced production equipment.
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration with cross-functional teams and shop-floor personnel.
- Ability to manage projects and lead process improvement initiatives.
Physical Abilities
- Frequent walking and standing are required to move around the manufacturing floor, observe production lines, and inspect equipment.
- Regular inspection of machinery, tools, and equipment involves close physical interaction, including bending, kneeling, or crouching to access hard-to-reach parts of machines.
- Climbing ladders or steps may be necessary to reach elevated machinery or work areas.
- Lifting, carrying, or manipulating tools and parts may be required when troubleshooting, modifying, or testing equipment.
- Operating hand tools or machinery for minor adjustments or repairs.
- Testing machines and processes to ensure smooth operations may require active engagement with the equipment.
- Positioning and adjusting equipment or workstations to ensure ergonomic efficiency for the operators, which may involve moving or manipulating various components.
- Ensuring safety standards are met, which could include assessing physical risks or hazards related to the machinery.
- Frequently interacting with production staff and participating in training or demonstrations, which could involve manual tasks related to process improvement.
