POSITION SUMMARY
The Director, Finance will lead strategic financial planning and oversee all financial operations for Toronto Global. This key leadership position will be the primary resource for the Finance \& Audit Committee Chair, provide guidance and propose solutions in relation to new funding agreements/renewals, and will monitor and report on the financial progress, results, and stability of Toronto Global. The Director will be responsible for developing and executing the annual operating budget; maintaining relationships with our funding partners at all three levels of government; managing cash-flow; financial planning and analysis; leading the audit process; and ensuring compliance with all contractual terms, legislation, and government requirements. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Financial Management
- Deliver accurate and detailed information to the CEO and executive management team (EMT), providing advice on financial and accounting processes and procedures
- Present and sign-off on accurate financial statements and reports for the CEO, Finance \& Audit Committee, and Board of Directors
- Manage and safeguard corporate assets, implement controls, and monitor cash flow
- Lead financial management, develop financial models, and conduct scenario planning to mitigate corporate risk
Leadership \& Accounting Operations
- Provide guidance and support to one direct report (Accountant) to ensure accurate and timely financial transactions, including A/P, A/R, payroll, OMERS reconciliations, Manulife , general ledger, and journal entries.
- Manage and negotiate corporate insurance, vendor contracts, corporate line of credit, corporate credit cards for staff, and office lease options with real estate broker at renewal
- Develop processes and procedures for internal review and audit to support financial KPIs and metrics
- Oversee transition to new accounting system including needs assessment, platform selection, implementation and training
Financial Planning \& Budgeting
- Oversee the annual budgeting process including preparation of the annual operating budget, projections, scenario analyses, and identification of relevant trends or challenges.
- Provide support and guidance to department leaders in developing and managing their respective budgets, analyzing variances, and taking corrective actions.
- Revise budgets subject to funding renewals and in-year corporate expenditures non-budgeted
- Work in collaboration with EMT to develop and prepare the budget section of the annual business plan and strategic plan (as required), based on funding
Controls, Audit \& Funding
- Manage the annual audit process, including working with external auditors and responding to all inquiries as they arise.
- Ensure compliance with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidelines for all tax and reporting obligations, including sign off of GST returns and other required government payments.
- Maintain relationships with Government funding stakeholders, managing Toronto Global's funding agreements and claims process. Ensure all reporting and claims are submitted on a timely and accurate basis.
- Manage CRA or funder audits and contribute to the negotiations and activation of funding agreements
- Advise and support decision making on program funding, alternative revenue streams, and special projects, as required
- Manage annual and quarterly reporting obligations for federal, provincial and municipal funding partners and align reporting requirements where possible.
- Oversee invoicing to municipalities required by funding agreements and follow up on funding commitments
DESIRED SKILLS \& EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or a related field
- Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation in good standing is required
- Minimum of 8 years' experience in Finance, with at least 2 years at the leadership level
- Experience in both private sector and government-funded organizations, or within the non-profit, economic development, or innovation ecosystem
- Demonstrated expertise in developing and executing financial strategies that enhance organizational growth and ensure long-term financial sustainability
- Ability to simplify complex funding agreements and claims into clear, transparent budgets for department leaders
- Strategic planning skills, including risk assessment delivery and implementation of effective mitigation strategies
- Experience in preparing for and managing different types of audits
- Advanced Excel skills and expertise with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage or related required
- Solid proficiency with MS365 applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, etc.)
- Experience with payroll applications (e.g., ADP) and automated expense software (e.g., Float, Concur) is an asset
- Experience establishing KPIs and metrics to benchmark, drive results, and support operational excellence
- Passion for automating and modernizing Finance activities using technology and AI
- Strong leadership skills with a proven track record of mentoring staff and motivating high-performing teams
- Financial and business acumen with an in-depth understanding of financial regulations, not for profit accounting standards, including experience with PSAB standards, and best practices in financial management
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and intentional time management to meet tight deadlines
- An appreciation and understanding of the global economic and business climate and a passion for the Toronto Region is a must!
