Description
Undergrad Learning Services within the Faculty of Science is currently seeking a full-time, limited-term Education Assistant for approximately 24 months.
The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory (RAO) is a teaching and research facility, and community engagement hub, for the University of Calgary, located about 20 km south of Calgary. Employees at RAO must have a Class 5 driver's license and a reliable vehicle.
The Education Assistant supports the public outreach mission of the RAO by designing and conducting programs, assisting with events, and engaging with visitors of all ages through presentations, demonstrations, and educational programs. The role involves public engagement, community outreach, and ensuring a safe, enjoyable experience for visitors.
This position reports to the Manager of Undergraduate Learning Services and works under the supervision of the RAO Director and Education Specialist.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver presentations and demonstrations on astrophysics research and topics for visitors of all ages.
- Research and develop educational programs based on current astrophysics research and educational best practices.
- Maintain and expand knowledge of physics and astrophysics fundamentals and recent discoveries.
- Represent the University of Calgary to the public and community groups.
- Engage with community, school, youth, and diverse groups through outreach activities, including attending trade shows and science fairs.
- Coordinate volunteer activities and develop educational hands-on activities.
- Assist with program operations, including visitor questions, telescope operation, scheduling, and safety.
Qualifications
- University degree in Education, Museum Studies, Astrophysics, or related Science field.
- Relevant experience in educational programming or museum management may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Knowledge of physics, astrophysics, and telescope technology is an asset.
- Experience in program design and administration.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to engage diverse audiences and explain scientific concepts clearly.
- Ability to occasionally lift objects weighing up to 15 kg.
