Supervisor / Lead Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic (Red Seal)

Emterra operates four major Recycling and Waste Centers in Metro Vancouver, receiving and managing large volumes of waste while promoting recycling and the green economy. We are looking to hire a Supervisor / Lead Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanic / Earth Moving Equipment Mechanic for our United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre. This position reports to the Maintenance Manager and is responsible for diagnosing and repairing facility equipment in a safe and timely manner.
As a Mechanic Lead Hand, you will be responsible for leading the day-to-day operation of Emterra Maintenance Equipment. This includes overseeing a team of apprentices and mechanics, conducting preventative maintenance, ensuring repair quality and safety. The role requires servicing, diagnosing, and completing preventative maintenance repairs on waste handling equipment (front end loaders, excavators, dozers) while working closely with the facility and maintenance team. This is a hands-on position; the Lead Hand is expected to be on the tools for 70% or more of their daily time. The position reports directly to the Maintenance Manager. You will also be responsible for building and maintaining a positive work environment and a high-performance team culture to deliver superior customer service.

What will you do?
- Review and organize work according to Preventative Maintenance schedules and manufacturers' recommendations.
- Repair waste handling equipment, including troubleshooting hydraulics and electrical systems.
- Ensure all equipment, vehicles, and work areas comply with safety policies and regulations.
- Diagnose and rectify faults, address service calls and breakdowns promptly.
- Minimize equipment downtime and ensure fleet readiness for operations the next day.
- Maintain all equipment records and files with the CMMS Coordinator.
- Ensure the shop and surrounding grounds are clean and organized.
- Perform all work safely, cost-effectively, and timely, along with other duties as assigned.
What will you bring?
The successful candidate will be skilled in prioritization, planning, coordination, and organization, with the ability to respond and adapt in high-pressure environments. You should be able to assess problems, recognize issues, and create solutions that meet standards.
- Red Seal Certificate in Heavy Equipment Mechanic trade.
- At least 5 years of experience as a Heavy Duty Mechanic.
- Leadership experience is an asset.
- Valid driver's license with air brake endorsement.
- Strong technical knowledge of waste handling equipment.
- Positive attitude and strong work ethic.
- Willingness to take on new challenges and grow with experience.
- Computer skills and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work late, weekends, or holidays as needed.
- Ability to work independently.
