Position Summary
The Multimedia Specialist is an integral member of the Learning Design unit, and reports to the Associate Dean. The primary role of the Multimedia Specialist is to work in close collaboration with Subject Matter Experts and Learning Design Consultants to design and develop interactive digital course content deployed within the College’s Learning Management System (Brightspace by D2L). In this way, the Learning Design unit supports the achievement of access, quality & sustainability goals articulated in the Bow Valley College Institutional Plan.
This position requires the incumbent to be flexible in relation to the scope and scheduling of various duties and services requested by the departments and to keep current with trends and research in the fields of responsive and accessible web design, digital media production, and online learning. The incumbent is expected to maintain an advanced knowledge of the College’s Learning Management System (Brightspace by D2L) and online collaboration tools (Microsoft Teams), and to provide support and training to faculty and other team members on the use of these tools. The incumbent will be responsible for the creation and editing of web pages and preparing interactive learning objects (using various types of code, such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript). Additional duties will include digital audio and video production, including the creation of animations and motion graphics; script writing for video projects and training scenarios; assisting with the creation of reports; desktop publishing; photo and illustration creation and editing; developing electronic presentations; troubleshooting existing courses in D2L; and other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Position responsibilities and accountabilities include but are not limited to:
Web and Digital planning and development
Coordinates projects and advises on web and digital design, monitors status, and ensures project objectives and end user needs are met
Provides technical and creative expertise during pre-production, production and post-production stages
Researches, documents, and implements digital project requirements and specifications
Establishes collaborative partnerships with subject matter experts, learning design consultants, and instructors.
Participates in team meetings and takes on appropriate roles.
Reviews, revises, designs and/or develops content to support course curriculum.
Collaborates with Subject Matter Experts and Learning Design Consultants to inform project development, establish work plans, develop project guidelines, creates content including lessons, interactive activities, and assessments to improve skills and measure learning.
Works with SMEs and Consultants to establish the framework for the course design and to identify areas where custom media content will enhance learning.
Incorporates artistic, innovative, and creative style into all works while focusing on the needs of the learners.
Participates as a subject matter expert for the use of media in course delivery.
Recommends the necessary resources and software needed to complete projects.
Collaborates with the Copyright Office to ensure copyright compliance.
Develops and maintains e-learning content using various technologies, web-applications, and software.
Collaborates with stakeholders to create digital learning assets, including audio and video files, photographs, illustrations, animations, and other content as required.
Designs and develops custom interactive web assets that are user-friendly and visually appealing.
Develops responsive web templates and style guides, to standardize and streamline content development.
Produces multimedia materials to meet project objectives, applying expertise in the production of content optimized for online delivery.
Collaborates with stakeholders to write and produce scripts for assessment scenarios and media projects.
Directs audio and video recording sessions for media projects, including lighting, camera operation, audio capture, and directing talent performance.
Organizes video shoots and audio recording sessions; scouts, selects and reserves recording locations.
Works with internal and external talent to coordinate schedules for audio and video recording.
Designs and adheres to media maintenance structure, processes, procedures, and guidelines.
Organizes and maintains the department’s media libraries (MS Azure, MS Stream, Chorus, Getty images).
Maintains awareness and knowledge of current trends related to user-centered design, user experience design, web development, graphic design, and media production.
Creates content that adheres to current best practices for web accessibility and Universal Design for Learning.
Develops knowledge and skills related to web development and media production as required to maintain currency in the field.
Adheres to BVC policies and guidelines.
Course Preparation in Learning Management System
Prepares course master shells in the College’s Learning Management System (D2L).
Creates learning objects and content pages for deployment to D2L.
Organizes course content layout for logical grouping of learning modules and course flow.
Builds Question Libraries, Quizzes, Discussion Boards, Grade Books, and Rubrics in D2L.
Creates and links Intelligence Agents with release conditions to course content for phased availability to the learner.
D2L and MS Teams Training and Support
Troubleshoots errors in existing courses on D2L caused by routine technology updates and post-deployment edits.
Provides training and support to instructors and subject matter experts in the proper use of D2L for online course delivery and MS Teams for collaboration and online instruction.
Understands the limitations of the D2L environment and suggests alternatives, when required, to ensure learning objectives can be effectively met.
Required qualifications:
Diploma in a related field
3-5 years of related experience
Intermediate/advanced skills in videography, audio recording and editing, web design
High Intermediate to advanced skills in the use of the Adobe Creative Suite, with emphasis on Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Dreamweaver, or similar professional media design and editing software
Effective project management skills and ability to work with diverse teams
Skilled in the use of MS Office Suite, Internet Explorer and Desire 2 Learn
High Intermediate to advanced skills in responsive web design with experience hand-coding and troubleshooting HTML, JavaScript, and CSS
Strong time management and organizational skills
An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered
A portfolio demonstrating previous work
