Position Summary: Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Initiatives, the Indigenous Representation and Events Officer will support the implementation of the core priorities of the Indigenous Initiatives team, focussing on the achievement of McGill’s 52 Calls to Action that address commitments to advancing Indigenous physical representation, the recognition of Indigenous excellence, and building greater awareness about Indigenous cultures and knowledges across McGill’s campus community. Organize the logistics for key university-wide events. Develop key media and communication tools, including writing and editing material that foster a greater awareness of local and regional Indigenous initiatives. Primary Responsibilities: Design and deliver programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing Indigenous cultural competencies across McGill’s campus community. Develop strategies and initiatives that support internal stakeholders in understanding how the institutional land acknowledgement can inform their work in a way that supports reconciliation and contributes to Indigenous wellbeing in meaningful ways. Organize the logistics for key university-wide events throughout the year aimed at celebrating Indigenous knowledges and cultures. Plan logistics, catering, venue and liaise with vendors. Plan and carry out events aimed at supporting and strengthening Indigenous community at McGill. Collaborate with internal partners to observe Truth and Reconciliation Day Collaborate with internal McGill staff and students to develop and oversee Indigenous led processes that ensure the respectful integration of Indigenous perspectives and values into campus spaces and facilities. Liaise with internal McGill stakeholders to develop strategies and initiatives across the university that increase opportunities for the recognition and celebration of Indigenous excellence. Provide advice to internal stakeholders on how to build and maintain respectful relations with Indigenous communities. Liaise and collaborate with internal and external partners including the Communications and External Relations team, the Office of the Associate Provost, service providers (translation, photographers, videographers, graphic designers) Engage with Indigenous communities to build stronger relationships and partnerships, ensuring their perspectives and needs are integrated into campus initiatives. Develop and implement methods for evaluating the effectiveness of programs and initiatives and incorporate feedback to ensure continuous improvement. Annually report on activities, outcomes, and progress towards the 52 Calls to Action, maintaining thorough documentation for transparency and accountability Develop key media and communication tools that foster a greater awareness of local and regional Indigenous protocols, languages, values, and perspectives. Identify existing gaps and provide advice to administrative units in support of fostering a more welcoming and respectful environment for Indigenous staff. Supervises the communications assistant position and casual support staff Performs other related duties as assigned. Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in a relevant field. 3-5 years of related experience, preferably with Indigenous communities. Skills and Competencies Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, issues and relational contexts. Strong organizational and communication skills. Proven experience in event and program development. Demonstrated project management skills. Experience in managing projects. Commitment to advancing Indigenous initiatives. Excellent interpersonal skills. Strong leadership and problem-solving abilities. Ability to develop, collaborate and build positive, supportive and respectful relationships with colleagues and Indigenous communities.
