When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of 426 Brant Street, City Hall. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Effective January 2026 this role will be in person a minimum of 10 days per month. Position Overview As a vital member of our Transportation Services team, the Traffic Signal Technologist plays an instrumental role in shaping the future of Burlington’s traffic management system. Reporting to the Supervisor of Traffic Signals, the Traffic Signal Technologist is responsible for the operation of the traffic signal system, creating and implementing signal timing plans, preparing traffic signal design drawings and providing detailed review and comments related to various construction projects with an impact to traffic signal operations to ensure safe and efficient movement of people and goods. This position is responsible for investigating and responding to inquiries and complaints and collaborating with various city departments relating to traffic signal operations and for coordinating the delivery of departmental programs. Responsibilities The successful candidate will: Develop, monitor and evaluate localized and corridor-level traffic signal timing plans and control strategies to ensure correlation with prevailing traffic patterns Proactively and reactively troubleshoot and identify system issues and malfunctions and liaising with maintenance contractors. Ensure all work is completed within applicable legal, engineering standards and policy requirements. Monitor and assess road network performance through a combination of field observations and studies, as well as the signal system and various other Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) tools Utilize and configure software packages and ITS devices including traffic controllers, traffic cameras, data collection devices and connected vehicle equipment Prepare traffic signal construction drawings and compile tender items/quantities for new traffic signals and for signal rebuilds or modifications in conjunction with road construction projects Assist in the development of and oversight of various traffic signal projects and work programs Assist in the review of traffic impact studies, construction works/road closures, special events Investigate and respond to inquiries from Council and the public preparing reports and representing the department to present findings as needed. Organize and complete various field studies related to traffic signal operations and road network capacity Assist in the oversight of contractor work including the development of contract documents, inspecting work and confirming quantities, ensuring proper record management Requirements The Traffic Signal System Analyst requires a 3-year college diploma in Transportation Engineering Technology or a related field and at least 4 years of related work experience. The incumbent must demonstrate a strong knowledge of traffic signal operations and theory, as well as excellent communication, analytical and time-management skills. The Traffic Signal System Analyst will be proficient in Microsoft Office as well as computer-based traffic control systems and signal timing and analysis programs such as Synchro. A valid G class driver’s licence is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract (no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire).
