When attending an event or meeting in person, your primary office location will be based out of City Hall, 426 Brant Street. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands. Effective January 2026 this role will be in person a minimum of 10 days per month. Position Overview The Platform Architect is responsible for managing, maintaining, and optimizing the City’s infrastructure including on premises systems and cloud-based services to support Burlington’s digital operations, ensuring seamless operations and security. Responsibilities As the Platform Architect, you will play a critical role in overseeing and optimizing the City’s infrastructure services spanning 30+ sites. This position supports the City's digital transformation initiatives and ensures that the technology infrastructure remains secure, reliable, and scalable. This role may require you to be on-call periodically on a rotation basis. Reporting to the Manager of Digital Platforms, you will: Implement and support network services and IT technology infrastructure that includes voice and data communications, email and telephone services, application servers, operating systems, network equipment, security appliances, and storage. Maintain and support Azure cloud services, including the existing Azure Landing Zone (ALZ) and Azure Arc, ensuring effective integration with on-premises infrastructure to deliver scalable and secure cloud solutions Perform an advisory role on network technology standards, trends, and solutions by researching and evaluating networking applications and technologies in the marketplace. Manage and maintain telephony infrastructure, including VoIP systems, PBX, SIP trunks, and related hardware/software to ensure high availability and performance. Collaborate with business units to recommend and implement technological solutions that effectively meet business needs. Continuously update skills to stay current with evolving technology. Work with vendors to implement technology services and resolve technical problems. Manage relationships with key infrastructure vendors, ensuring service-level agreements are met and City requirements are understood. Perform network and server monitoring, analysis, and optimization. Maintain identity and access management design and administration. Ensure consistent monitoring of critical systems to prevent downtime, swiftly resolve incidents, and maintain optimal performance. Ensure systems are secure, meet compliance requirements, and are regularly patched for vulnerabilities. Provide advanced network troubleshooting and administration services. Maintain data backup and disaster recovery solutions; monitor system backups and health to ensure data integrity and successful recovery capabilities. Lead and coordinate initiatives aimed at infrastructure modernization and operational cost optimization, all while maintaining architecture principles to reduce technical complexity and enhance performance and stability. Provide technical leadership on infrastructure projects, ensuring alignment with long-term strategies. Develop and maintain documentation and procedures to enhance the efficiency of infrastructure operations. Requirements Completion of a 3- or 4-year degree/diploma in a in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Azure, VMware, Cisco, ITIL, TOGAF, Linux certifications (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect) or relevant infrastructure certifications would be an asset. More than 4 years of experience in systems administration, infrastructure management, or related IT roles. Strong experience with Microsoft Azure and hybrid cloud environments. Knowledge of telephony infrastructure (VoIP, SIP, RTP, PBX systems, and cloud-based telephony platforms) is considered an asset. Experience managing physical and virtual servers, as well as network infrastructure (routers, switches, firewalls). Proven ability to work effectively with vendors and manage complex projects involving multiple stakeholders. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve infrastructure issues under pressure. Solid understanding of backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity planning. Experience with automation and scripting to improve efficiency and automate routine tasks. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. This position may require occasional travel between sites and/or City facilities.
