WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Provide legal counsel on a broad range of issues affecting the insurance industry, including regulatory compliance, claims, underwriting, product development, and marketing, with a focus on Bermuda's regulatory framework.
Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and agreements, including insurance policies, vendor contracts, and corporate agreements, ensuring compliance with Bermuda’s legal and regulatory requirements.
Advise senior management and various business units on legal risks, strategy, and best practices in the insurance field.
Manage and oversee litigation and dispute resolution matters, working with external counsel when necessary, and ensuring adherence to Bermuda's legal procedures.
Monitor changes in Bermuda’s laws, regulations, and industry standards affecting the insurance sector, and ensure the company’s compliance with these requirements.
Assist with corporate governance matters, including the drafting of corporate policies, internal procedures, and board resolutions, in line with Bermuda corporate law.
Provide guidance on employee relations issues, including labor law, employment policies, and employee disputes within Bermuda’s legal framework.
Assist in the creation and implementation of compliance programs to ensure the company adheres to all applicable local and international regulations, including those specific to the insurance industry.
Handle regulatory filings and respond to inquiries from Bermuda’s regulatory agencies, such as the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA).
Work collaboratively with other departments, including claims, underwriting, risk management, and finance, to provide legal guidance and mitigate risk.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE:
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school or equivalent.
Active membership in the Bermuda Bar or the ability to qualify to practice law in Bermuda.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in legal practice, with a strong preference for candidates with prior experience in insurance law, regulatory matters, or in-house counsel roles within the insurance industry.
Strong understanding of Bermuda’s insurance regulations and regulatory framework, including the Bermuda Insurance Act, the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA) guidelines, and international insurance regulations.
Proven ability to draft and negotiate complex legal agreements and contracts.
Experience managing legal disputes, including litigation and alternative dispute resolution, within Bermuda’s legal environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating legal risks.
Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Strong business acumen and the ability to partner with various departments to achieve corporate objectives.
