Position Description The McGill University Department of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as an Academic Clinician or Clinician–Scientist at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The successful candidate will be based at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The professorial rank will be determined according to the chosen candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure. The Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH. The Division of Pediatric Rheumatology is a clinically strong group that offers the full range of rheumatology care to children and adolescents. With the addition of a new member, there will be 4 full time and 2 part-time members with academic strengths in multiple fields including medical education, research, advocacy, and health services delivery. The Division is supported by a multidisciplinary team that includes administrative assistants, specialized nursing staff, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work and psychology. The Division has an active, fully accredited Royal College Pediatric Rheumatology residency program, one of only 3 in Canada and the sole program in Quebec. Academic Clinicians focus on inpatient and ambulatory patient care and teaching (didactic and bedside) the next generation of physicians. Clinician-Scientists are appointed as members of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), joining one of the eight active research programs at the RI-MUHC. Fundamental scientists are affiliated with the Centre for Translational Biology, while clinical scientists are affiliated with the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation. Clinician-scientist candidates will be expected to commit 50%-75% of their time to research. Job Duties The successful candidate will be expected to supervise medical students, residents, and fellows. They will also be expected to contribute to academic rounds, and be actively involved in the scholarly activities in this field. Compensation is based on a hybrid model, derived in part from fee-for-service billings. The successful candidate will be an active physician member of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, MUHC. The successful candidate will be expected to share equally in on-call night and weekend duties in Pediatric Rheumatology. An academic clinician is expected to cover the consult service 13 weeks per year and hold 3 half-day outpatient clinics per week. A clinician-scientist is expected to cover the consult service 6-10 weeks per year and hold 1-2 half-day outpatient clinics per week. All are expected to attend division meetings. Supervision of medical students, residents, and fellows in the course of clinical care is mandatory and participation in the pediatric rheumatology training program is expected. Physicians in the Division of Rheumatology are also expected to contribute to our interdisciplinary education mission, supporting the education and professional development of nurses and nurse practitioners. All faculty in the Department of Pediatrics are expected to participate in formal teaching to residents and undergraduate medical students. Clinician-scientist candidates will be expected to demonstrate the ability to independently initiate, conduct, and manage a research program and must present an outline of their planned research program and needs for start-up funding. Clinician-scientists are expected to apply for salary support from the FRQS and to eventually obtain external operating grants for their research. The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees). McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. Qualifications and Education Requirements Candidates must: Hold an MD degree (or equivalent) and hold, or be eligible for, licensure to practice medicine in Quebec; Have completed postgraduate clinical training in Pediatrics; Have completed specialty training in Pediatric Rheumatology with certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent); Candidates applying to the Clinician-Scientist position must have a minimum of 2 years of dedicated research training; a postgraduate degree (e.g., MSc or PhD); Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
