About the Role: Reporting to the Manager, Sponsored Research & Internal Programs the Research Officer is responsible for driving the growth of research at Brock by managing all aspects of the process of obtaining research grants. The incumbent manages the research grant and supporting contract process from inception through pre-proposal to post-compliance monitoring. Throughout this process, the Research Officer will ensure that research complies with University policies, federal and provincial regulations, and ethical standards. The Research Officer works across the University to build research capacity and provide educational and professional development opportunities to the Brock research community. The Research Officer will: Provide expert advice to Brock researchers on appropriate funding opportunities for their proposed research; Conduct assessments of research initiatives against eligibility criteria for internal as well as provincial and federal funding opportunities; Review and assess research proposals and counsel applicants regarding complex external and internal legal and compliance standards (including those bearing on research ethics, health and safety, animal care, etc.); Negotiate with internal and external partners the terms of research proposals and obtain approvals; Determine and confirm sources of institutional support for research proposals and manage the ‘letter of support’ process; Assess research budgets against University and funding agency policies, guidelines, and eligibility criteria to ensure compliance with institutional rates and policies as well as funding agency requirements; Negotiate terms of research and funding agreements using established legal templates; Liaise with colleagues specializing in partnerships and contract development, as required, to enable the creation of non-standard agreements; Administer agreements, including sourcing and advising on obtaining matching funds from the institution; Provide coaching on proposal revisions to improve likelihood of success, strengthen all aspects of proposals while maintaining the vision of the researcher, and align with the evaluation criteria of a specific funding program; Organize and administer different internal peer-reviewed research funding competitions; Create, develop, and draft program guidelines and application processes for internal and external funding opportunities and programs; Develop and deliver skill-development workshops for faculty, staff and students on: all aspects of research funding; grant development to maximize opportunities to obtain research funding; eligibility, requirements, and processes for specific funding opportunities; Continuously develop and improve workshops, webinars, and learning materials on relevant topics (i.e., equity, diversity and inclusion in research, grant-writing best practices, budget development, knowledge mobilization, data management, mitigation of national security risks in research, etc.). Key Skills and Experience: Masters level degree with a research component; Experience in a research-intensive setting with proven success writing grant and funding applications; Knowledge of the grant development and writing process, and regulations regarding research; Excellent skills in budget development and financial projections; High degree of initiative and self-management skills; Strong attention to detail coupled with excellent organizational, project management, and time management skills to handle multiple competing deadlines; Ability to build consensus, navigate complex situations, work under pressure with deadlines while maintaining professionalism, diplomacy and tact; Strong computer proficiency including Microsoft Office, database, and webpage maintenance skills; Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, and with partners in different units and institutions. Preferred or Asset Skills: PhD or equivalent research degree; Ability to work in both official languages. Salary and Total Rewards: Job Grade L, Salary Scale ($62,582-$107,280); Target Hiring Range: $65,000-$75,000 This is a fixed-term contract that includes: Health & Dental Benefits: Comprehensive extended health, dental, and vision coverage.
