Job Title: Student Retention Liaison

Job Summary
The Student Liaison leads and supports the implementation of attendance policy and the coordination of the before and after school program delivery. Responsibilities include overseeing and supervising programs, student attendance, monitoring school-wide attendance data, working with individual students and families with regard to attendance issues. This role will work with families to strengthen their relationship with school teachers and administrators to enhance communication between school and home.
Responsibilities
Work collaboratively with principals, teachers, student services, school counsellors, and staff regarding students who are absent or tardy and/or who have not responded to corrective efforts.
Liaise with the NS Department of Education and share expertise on attendance and home-school communication.
Identify attendance barriers.
Monitor school-wide attendance data.
Create a culture that engages students and increases attendance.
Responsible for coordinating and supervising after-school program delivery such as tutoring, extracurricular activities, events, and cultural programs.
Liaise with community agencies.
Meet with teachers regularly to address issues and barriers to student attendance.
Provide support to parents to help bridge the gap between school and home.
Strengthen school and community partnerships to develop the right supports for students.
Plan events that promote attendance and academic achievement.
Increase communications between school administration and parents/guardians.
Facilitate meetings with staff, parents, and students when attendance issues arise.
Communicate with students and parents regarding attendance and related issues.
Be flexible and accessible to all school locations.
Recommend student referrals to school specialists, guidance and community agencies.
Perform a variety of duties related to record keeping, data and reporting.
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work required
Eligibility for registration with Nova Scotia College of Social Workers
2 years of experience working in a school or community setting, preferably with Mi’kmaq children, youth and families.
Previous experience supervising staff
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Proficiency in Mi’kmaq and English required
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace applications. (docs, drive, sheets, classroom)
Valid driver's license and access to transportation, as required.
Preference will be given to Indigenous people in accordance with the Aboriginal Employment Preferences Policy of the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
