Position Purpose Summary: The Accounting Technician is responsible to facilitate the processing of tasks related to the accounting and finances of the entire ministry unit, Edmonton Centre of Hope, ensuring that all processes meet or exceed The Salvation Army’s accounting standards and reporting requirements. Accountabilities: Accounting Duties: Routine bookkeeping – reconciliation of meal and bus tickets and gift cards Prepare journal entries (correcting and/or adjusting month end) Accounts Payable – process invoices, corporate credit cards, employee expenses, fleet vehicle statements and request for refunds Accounts Receivable - residential payment and damage deposit reconciliation Accurately record financial and ‘gift in kind’ donations including the issuance of official receipts and the forwarding of information to Administration for ‘thank you’ to donors Handle and reconcile Petty Cash Complete Bank Deposits Complete reporting forms including month end reports, remittances, funder reports, internal reporting forms May assist in annual budgeting process Reconcile cash management/client folios and other reconciliation as required Directly deal with the clients including receiving and disbursing cash and daily cash closing Other work-related duties as required General Office Duties: Answer, screen, and direct telephone calls and inquiries Greet and respond to visitors to the Finance Department Resolve routine inquiries Give written and oral responses to inquiries, including responding to emails and faxes File documents electronically and/or manually Photocopy and distribute materials as requested Draft and type correspondence as required Open mail with 2nd staff member ensuring all donations (cash or cheque) is recorded and handled as per policy May order stationery and office supplies for department Handle and ensure the protection and confidentiality of all files and documents CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Governance Boards and Councils: None Internal: Ad Hoc committees as assigned (if required), department staff, department managers, clients or residents. External: As directed responding to Government agents for some inquiries. MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY: This position reports directly to the Finance Manager. This position has no direct reports. FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT: Regular responsibility for minor financial matters and for wise use of own resources. Authorized to handle small amounts of cash. Little input to annual budget or revenue projections. Handles all confidential accounting files, financial and statistic reports to Government bodies, funders, and others. WORKING CONDITIONS: Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions. Frequent sitting and keyboarding Occasional bending, walking, lifting (up to 5 kg) and standing. The incumbent’s work environment is typically at work sites within residential settings, and may experience the following disagreeable conditions: therefore, will need to follow or use universal precautions: Dealing with angry and abusive people, verbal abuse Exposure to bodily fluids, bodily waste, and infectious diseases Exposure to drugs, alcohol, and solvents Physical attacks by others Exposure to toxic chemicals Sharp objects (i.e., needle sticks, knives, and weapons) Other dangerous situations Immunization for Hepatitis B and vaccination against Tuberculosis Education, Qualifications and Certifications: Minimum two (2) years of Community College with certification in accounting/finance. Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements: Three (3) years of experience in an accounting office (as administrative assistant, accounting clerk, etc.). Two years of experience in accounting-related roles. Demonstrated proficiency in mathematical skills and cash handling. Experience working in an office setting with a workforce of 50+ employees. Skills and Capabilities: Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army – its mission, culture, and values. Attention to detail and accuracy, meticulous, organized and proficient working with numbers. Able to work in a diplomatic and tactful manner. Strong sense of integrity with professional ethics. Ability to handle confidential information. Strong written and verbal communication skills – clear and simple to understand. Effective organizational and time management skills – self-motivated and disciplined self-starter. This is a full time position at 40 hours per week. The hiring range is $43,402.12 to $65,103.18 annually. Compensation: The target hiring range for this position is $43,402.12 to $54,252.65 with a maximum of $65,103.18. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
