Position Overview:
The Zero Waste Coordinator will guide the Town of Canmore’s efforts to reduce waste from the residential, commercial, and building sectors, and work towards a more circular economy. The position will contribute technical, project management, research, creative program development, and community outreach expertise to increase waste diversion and reduce waste within the community.
The Zero Waste Coordinator will be responsible for the planning and delivery of community outreach activities, monitoring, and reporting, as well as leadership and support for waste policy and program design. The role requires technical skills and outreach expertise in the waste management field. The position will include public education, engagement and communication, community based social marketing, program design and management, data management and analysis, research, project management, procurement, grant management, and reporting to senior staff and Council.
The Zero Waste Coordinator will report to the Supervisor of Environment and Sustainability and work closely with the Supervisor of Solid Waste Services, Climate Action Coordinator, the Planning and Development and Communications departments, as well as community partners.
Core Accountabilities:
Is generally knowledgeable about all Town of Canmore services
Is able to successfully develop, implement, and evaluate education and community outreach programs for residential and commercial waste services, schools, and public-facing events
Is knowledgeable on waste management systems, construction renovation and demolition diversion strategies, circular economy principles and community education and engagement
Is experienced in the development and implementation of waste diversion policies and programs for the residential, commercial (businesses, institutions, multi-family), and corporate (Town of Canmore) sectors
In addition, this position at minimum will be expected to:
Build on the existing Circular Economy Roadmap to develop a zero waste/circular economy strategy, as recommended in the Climate Emergency Action Plan
Work with relevant Town departments, the Bow Valley Waste Management Commission, regional partners, and industry interest holders to reduce Construction Renovation and Demolition (CRD) waste
Develop and implement strategies to decrease the proportion of food waste and recyclables in residential and commercial garbage
Expand food recovery and food waste reduction initiatives
Support waste reduction efforts for community events, including the use of reusable cups and dishes
Explore options to decrease single-use items, including a potential bylaw
Expand sharing economy initiatives that advance affordability (e.g., Library of Things)
Work with the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley on their waste related initiatives
Proficiently and efficiently uses computer operating systems, software, and applications such as MS Office
Maintains confidentiality of all Town information
Anticipates sensitive issues and plans an appropriate strategy
Education & Qualifications:
Post secondary education, diploma or certification in environmental sciences or similar, education, engagement, community-based social marketing, and/or public participation – required
A bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, marketing, education, planning, or related field – an asset
Technical experience and understand of waste management, community outreach, and/or engagement practices – an asset
Possession of a valid Alberta driver’s license and satisfactory driving record – required
Abilities & Experience:
3-5 years of experience developing and delivering community-based outreach and engagement to encouraged desired behaviours, such as increased waste diversion – required
Experience in a municipal setting – preferred
Experience handling professional calls – required
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft office programs (particularly Excel) – required
Ability to conduct rigorous research, summarize findings and present recommendations to council/committees and non-technical audiences for decision making – required
Excellent people skills and ability to engage with the public and interact in a positive manner with a varied interest holder groups – required
Strong oral and written communication in English – required
Organizational habits to understand, realistically plan for and meet deadlines, while adapting to changing demands and priorities – required
Experience with strategy development and implementation – required
Experience developing and reporting on metrics and progress indicators – required
Strong community engagement and public education skills, including familiarity with public engagement approaches and processes such as Community Based Social Marketing or IAP2 – an asset
Knowledge of waste management systems including landfill processes, recycling and organics diversion methods and rationale – an asset
Creative talent for program development and developing educational materials – an asset
Knowledge and experience with circular economy principles – an asset
Experience working with different sectors, including the hospitality, construction and development, and community events industries – an asset
Experience developing and implementing waste auditing and characterization activities that provide qualitative and quantitative evaluation of residential and commercial waste services – an asset
Salary & Benefits:
Pay Range- $43.48 to $45.89 per hour to start. Compensation will be calculated based on the successful candidate’s related work experience and education
