About the Role:
Program promotion and partnership development with other organizations, outreach directly to individuals in urban and rural communities in Durham will be required. Facilitate the delivery of the Record Suspension Services (RS), (including Cannabis Record Suspensions) by assisting individuals to successfully navigate the Record Suspension application process while providing brief counselling supports, community referrals and additional resources to enhance the rehabilitation/reintegration journey of the service user. The Specialist will collaborate with existing JHS Durham record suspension services, assess eligibility, support the individual and the process of obtaining an RS, and maintain information pertinent to the process, program, and its evaluation. You will collaborate with our lead program partner and other John Howard Society affiliates and participate in a community of practice to enhance project outcomes.

Service User support:
Meet with individuals virtually, in-office and community to determine eligibility for a Record Suspension
Utilize knowledge of the justice system to provide accurate information to service users, community organizations and the public
Support individuals through the process of completing the application for a Record Suspension
Utilize interviewing and counselling skills to assess motivation for Record Suspension as well as assess the need for other services and refer appropriately
Deliver services in a way that reflects the racial, cultural, linguistic, and gender-specific needs of the community being served
Determine eligibility for program subsidies and apply consistently as required
Case Management and Documentation:
Maintain up-to-date case records and file notes
Connect with fingerprinting services, courts, police services, parole board, etc. to obtain or provide appropriate documentation and information for the RS process
Ensure that services delivered are efficient and effective through an outcome evaluation
Track and submit all data and documentation for program evaluation
Community Development:
Focus on client group in most need of the service
Must have the ability to travel within the GTA to attend John Howard Society partnership meetings
Establish referral processes
Market and promote to regional social service organizations and cultural organizations utilizing a variety of pathways including direct contact and social media
Facilitate Record Suspension information workshops for community collaborators and partners
Foster relationships with organizations that support the target population
Identify service gaps and implement solutions where able
Attend and participate in partnership and agency/staff committees and meetings as required
Maintaining accessible, relevant, responsive and quality service
Monitor and maintain program financial tracking as appropriate
Applicant Requirements
Post-secondary diploma or degree in Criminal Justice or Social Service field
An understanding of justice-involved individuals and the ability to assess and refer appropriately
Experience and understanding of the Record Suspension process and criminal records in general
Knowledge of and ability to apply crisis intervention techniques
Strong written and oral communication skills
Able to apply a trauma-informed and gender-based analysis approach/framework to the project
Ability to contribute and support other agency programs as needed
Strong interpersonal skills
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail
Solid professional boundaries
