Life Sciences Lab Technician
Position Overview:
The Lab Technician will work closely with the lab team to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the Life Sciences Innovation Hub¿s Life Sciences labs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Senior Lab Manager in overseeing the shared lab spaces and providing guidance to the lab members on laboratory policies and procedures.
- Perform basic laboratory operations to maintain equipment and ensure compliance with safety and quality control requirements.
- Provide training, technical assistance, and advice to companies on proper use of equipment.
- Assist startup companies in ordering materials and supply for their operation, creating quotes, POs, sales orders, and ensuring the delivery of ordered items in a timely manner.
- Assist companies in compliance with SOPs and safety protocols.
- Keep detailed records as required and inventories up to date.
- Assist companies with management of biohazardous and chemical waste.
- Run the autoclave and glassware washing facilities.
- Prepare buffers and reagents for the shared lab space.
- Calibrate equipment and keep calibration logs as per protocols.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or related field or certification as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) (Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science-CSMLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) (ASCP), or equivalent.
- Experience working as a lab technician or assistant in containment level II, wet labs.
- Knowledge of molecular and microbiological techniques and procedures.
- Solid understanding of Biosafety protocols and regulations as set out by PHAC and Health Canada.
- Practical knowledge in the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of laboratory equipment or a willingness to learn is required.
- Ability to push, pull, lift or carry moderate weight- 20-40lbs.
- Proficiency in MS Office suite, experience or a willingness to learn a variety of booking, accounting, and laboratory information management platforms.
- Sound knowledge of the principles of sanitation and disinfection or a willingness to learn is required.
- Understanding of and ability to work using industry specific laboratory safety standards.
- Enthusiastic about start-ups, innovation, and product development.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- An eagerness to provide support to LSIH companies.
- Familiarity with University of Calgary groups, departments and processes.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Great attention to detail.
- Good experimental troubleshooting skill.
