Description
The Research Centre in the Faculty of Social Work invites applications for a Research Associate. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 3 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Principal Investigator (PI) and will work to provide leadership, advising and support to the PI and research team as well as training of research assistants. The Research Associate will work flexible hours to a maximum of 35 hours per week. Flexible hours may be required to meet with PI, research team members, research partners and study participants. Job stressors are moderate, and the incumbent must be able to organize and prioritize multiple accountabilities independently with minimal supervision and direction to meet deadlines and competing priorities. The work environment requires most of the time spent at a computer or on the telephone.
The incumbent will support several research projects and needs to be able to evaluate the relevance of research literature for inclusion in manuscripts, presentations, written grant proposals and other relevant documents.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Prepare under the guidance of the PI, submissions to the Research Ethics Board (REB), track the status and results of ethics submissions, and ensure research activities continuously adhere to ethical standards.
- Collaboratively create a work plan and monitor project timelines to ensure deadlines are met accordingly.
- Develop promotional materials and co-ordinate advertising for the recruitment of participants following University of Calgary Branding.
- Assist with data collection; develop recruiting materials, recruitment of research participants and providing them with accurate and relevant project information, obtain participant consent and conduct focus groups, interviews, and observations.
- Develop and implement literature review search strategies and environmental scans that support the project's development as well as future publications on the topic.
- Create and administer questionnaires and surveys to participants.
- Assist with evaluation of project outcomes.
- Assist with onboarding of research assistants and site coordinator and provide them with mentorship, guidance, and training.
- Build connections with community members and organizations.
- Ensure professional standards in oral and written communication with internal and external stakeholder is being met by all parties involved and provide updates on project activities.
- Maintain detailed and organized project documentation (both electronic and physical files, including storing and managing the files).
- Maintain processes related to the secure transmission and storage of research data following policies set by the University of Calgary and following FOIP regulations.
- Provide knowledge and judgement on revising processes as needed and communicating these changes to all parties involved.
- Attend all training and meetings with collaborators.
- Managing own time effectively with high level of concentration required and ensuring the PI is kept informed of activities and progress of work.
- Work effectively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Master's degree in social work, social sciences or a related discipline is required; masters is an asset.
- Minimum 3 years experience in qualitative data analysis is required.
- Strong interest and/or experience in research methods, trauma and working with Black communities is required.
- Demonstrates strong skills conducting qualitative research, particularly participant recruitment and data collection through interviews and focus group discussions.
- Experience designing and distributing surveys using Qualtrics.
- Evidence of superior written and verbal communication skills.
- Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) is required.
- Computer literacy and ease with learning new software programs, such as NVivo or other qualitative software is required.
- Familiarity with online meeting software, such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams, an asset.
- Advanced knowledge of library databases and search engines is required.
- Ability to manage time and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
- Critical thinking skills is required.
- Discretion, discernment, and confidentiality is required.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and positively engage in a team environment, both in-person and virtual.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships and facilitate collaboration between diverse groups.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and to demonstrate a high level of tact, diplomacy, and discretion.
- Detail oriented.
