The Hotchkiss Brain Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Communications Assistant, Summer Student. This Full-time Fixed Short-Term position is for approximately 5 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Manager, Communications.
The primary purpose of the position is to support the HBI's communications efforts by assisting with content development, administrative tasks, and digital asset management.
This position will work for 35 hours per week, with flexibility in the schedule.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Maintain and update communication materials, including website content, member profiles, and digital assets
- Assist in drafting, proofreading, and formatting content for newsletters, reports, and funding applications
- Research and compile content for key reports and feature stories highlighting HBI achievements
- Track media coverage, research engagement opportunities, and support messaging development
- Develop and refine communication templates, ensuring consistency with HBI branding
- Support the creation and organization of visual assets, including basic design and video editing
- Organize and archive communication files for easy access and long-term use
- Perform other communications-related administrative tasks as needed
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- High School diploma (or equivalent) is the minimum requirement. Post-secondary education in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field is an asset
- Previous experience in communications, writing, or content management is an asset
- Strong organizational skills; ability to prioritize tasks according to importance and due dates
- Familiarity with data management tools such as Excel, and/or Asana
- Ability to synthesize information from meetings and conversations into briefs and minutes to summarize the important takeaways
- Strong English language skills and grammatical correctness
- Excellent communication skills; confidence and politeness to work with a variety of stakeholders from senior leadership to medical professionals and researchers
- High level of organization with the ability to focus on details and complete tasks efficiently
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), Canva and/or video editing software is an asset
