The Department of Psychiatry in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position will be based out of the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research & Education as well as the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI).
This position involves research work in human participants using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The project involves using pharmacological agents to enhance synaptic plasticity during repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS). The experiments will involve questionnaires, participant screening and interviews, TMS stimulation, neurophysiological recordings (muscle evoked potentials and/or electroencephalography) and repeated stimulation sessions.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Under general supervision & direction of the PI, develop and implement original experiments within the guidelines of the research
- Undergo training for new, or new to the Research Assistant, methodologies used in the projects
- Undertake research ethics submissions and keep up to date with renewals and amendments
- Maintain research study binders, regulatory documentation and participant data, including electronic copies of these
- Research budget and allocations tracking and compilations, with monthly written reports to the PI
- Respond to interested participants' inquiries/concerns promptly (within one working day)
- Screen potential participants using methods determined by the PI
- Recruit and consent eligible participants for research studies
- Coordinate and schedule research visits according to study procedures
- Data entry, monitoring, cleaning, organization
- Conduct literature review, surveys, laboratory experiments and other research for us in scholarly publications when required to
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree, with preference for Masters degree in neuroscience or psychology, or an Engineering background
- Minimum 2 years of technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
- 1 to 3 years of related technical experience within clinical neuroscience
- Must have technical knowledge in transcranial magnetic stimulation or neural electrophysiology
- Previous experience with clinical populations, particularly psychiatric populations, an asset
- Proficiency in Matlab and/or Python, an asset
- Proficiency with electronics, an asset
- Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
- Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
- Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
- Knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures
- Provide semi-skilled to skilled technical procedures to support the research project
- Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
- Must have strong communication skills and ability to work with vulnerable participant populations, including participants with psychiatric disorders
- Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
- Must have strong analytical skills
- Work collaboratively with other psychiatric research teams and within the N3 network
- Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint), Internet skills
- Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
