The School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), Division of Music invites applications for Sessional Instructors to teach the following course(s) in the Fall 2025.
Lectures for the Fall 2025 term run from September 2 to December 5, 2025. Individual course dates are noted below; please see the academic schedule for additional important dates and deadlines.
NOTE: THE FOLLOWING COURSE OFFERINGS ARE TENTATIVE, PENDING FUNDING AND SUFFICIENT ENROLMENTS.
NOTE: THERE MAY BE CANDIDATES WITH THE RIGHT OF FIRST REFUSAL (TUCFA Collective Agreement 23.12).
Current Offerings for Fall 2025
MUED 331 Conducting I
Fall 2025 - September 2 - December 5
Tuesdays and Thursdays 9:30 - 10:45
Course Description: Basic conducting techniques with the use of the baton; simple and condensed scores for selected choral and instrumental works.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- At least a Master degree in Music and/or equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrated ability conducting ensembles of various sizes and abilities.
- Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver conducting curriculum at the post-secondary level.
MUED 401 Instrumental and Band Techniques I
Available to Woodwind instructors
Fall 2025 - September 2 - December 5
Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 - 12:15
Course Description: Performing and teaching techniques for instruments used in the schools.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- A graduate degree in Music (doctorate preferred) and/or equivalent professional experience
- Experience teaching wind instruments
- Experience teaching music in the school at either the elementary or secondary level
- Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver conducting curriculum at the post-secondary level
MUSI 127 Class Piano
Fall 2025 - September 2 - December 5
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 13:00 - 13:50
Course Description: Functional approach to the piano.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Doctoral degree in Music with an emphasis on piano performance and/or pedagogy and/or equivalent professional experience
- Significant teaching experience in both the classroom and in private lessons
- Demonstrated ability to deliver a piano curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
MUSI 230 Music History and Literature I
Fall 2025 - September 2 - December 5
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 11:00 - 11:50
Course Description: Music from the Medieval through early Baroque periods.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Doctoral degree in Music with a specialization in Music History and/or equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrated ability to deliver a music history curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
MUSI 330 Music History and Literature II
Fall 2025 - September 2 - December 5
Mondays and Wednesdays 14:00 - 15:15
Course Description: Music from the Late Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Doctoral degree in Music with a specialization in Music History and/or equivalent professional experience
- Demonstrated ability to deliver a music history curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
MUSI 341 Composition I
Fall 2025 - September 2 - December 5
Tuesday 9:00 - 11:45
Course Description: Basic compositional techniques, and study of selected twentieth-century compositions.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Doctoral degree in Music with a specialization in Composition and/or equivalent professional experience
- A portfolio demonstrating a record of excellence as a composer.
- Significant teaching experience in both the classroom and in private lessons
- Demonstrated ability to deliver a conducting curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
MUSI 429 Jazz Improvisation
Fall 2025 - September 2 - December 5
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 11:00 - 11:50
Course Description: Topics in jazz improvisation, stressing improvisational tools, including the learning jazz standards, chord progressions and jazz vocabulary.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- At least a Master in Music and/or equivalent professional experience
- Research interest or focus on both free Jazz and improvisation (in terms of academic work and performance)
- Significant teaching experience and demonstrated ability to deliver curriculum at the post-secondary level to students from a wide variety of backgrounds in both classroom and private environments.
