The Libin Cardiovascular Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Analyst. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Deputy Director and Research Director of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute, the Libin Core Labs Research Analyst position is expected to work independently with broad directives and in a self-directed manner to design, develop and perform complex and high-level laboratory experiments. Work intensity is variable and may, on occasion, require extended hours.
The Research Analyst's work will consist of highly analytical functions; assessing impact of error; troubleshooting complex issues; recommending changes to methods, procedures and practices; demonstrating strong communication, team and client service skills; and conducting and overseeing technical procedures. The position will require working with a range of animal models and tissues as well as complex experimental equipment. Work conditions may also require exposure to various hazardous materials and substances.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Under limited supervision and direction of Libin Institute Members, develop experimental plans and implement experimental studies using different approaches
- Present technical information and results to Libin Institute members utilizing core labs
- Design and implement studies requiring surgical interventions in rodent models
- Design and implement studies requiring acute surgical approaches (e.g. acute catheter insertion) in rodent models
- Design and implement studies requiring non-invasive imaging (echocardiography) in rodent models
- Design and implement studies requiring histological, immunohistochemical, and immunocytochemical approaches in animal and human tissues
- Work with tissue and blood from both humans and animals (primarily rodents)
- Analyze data and provide results, including representative data, in organized fashion as required by Libin Institute members
- Collaborate/work with trainees of Libin Institute Members utilizing Core Lab services
- Teaches, operates, maintains and troubleshoots laboratory equipment
- Manages own time effectively and ensures manager is kept informed of activities, and progress of work. This may include evening and weekend work
- Demonstrates strong communication, team skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
- Perform highly skilled technical work of considerable complexity
- Ensures following and adherence to study protocols, University of Calgary ethics, HIA and GCP guidelines
- Services meet the continuously changing needs of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and the University of Calgary
- Be able to supervise and train other staff and students as required
- Projects undertaken by this position require flexibility, are managed effectively and independently
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Masters degree required, PhD preferred
- 5-7 years of technical experience with the specific approaches summarized above and/or a willingness and ability to efficiently learn techniques and procedures required for the position.
- Ability to perform detailed design, implementation, and documentation of experimental approaches using the equipment and approaches supported in the Libin Institute Core Labs
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and achieve goals in a laboratory setting
- Ability to provide technical support, as well as train and supervise technical laboratory staff and students
- Extensive knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures and techniques supported in the Libin Institute Core Labs
- Must be open to learning and development and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
- Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
- Ability to work with various biological samples (eg. blood, tissues) and experimental animals
- Understanding of safety codes and standards related to specialization
- Strong leadership, interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, etc) are preferred
- A sound understanding of University, Health Services and Government structure and operations
- WHMIS Certification
