Primary Objectives:
As a Cyber Underwriter, you will play a critical role in driving new business growth, fostering broker relationships, and underwriting Cyber insurance products with a focus on profitability. This role primarily will be underwriting and pricing new business opportunities, while also collaborating with business development teams to support client acquisition and expand market presence.
This role will contribute to the strategic growth of both personal and commercial cyber insurance portfolios, engage in high-impact projects, and support the development of transactional and portfolio-level opportunities. Your customer-focused, agile, and innovative mindset will help us maintain a leading position in the specialty insurance market. This role reports directly to the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Cyber Practice within HSB's Cyber business unit and is an integral member of the team shaping the future of our cyber insurance offerings.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of the cyber insurance market, including evolving industry trends, competitor activity, and emerging threats.
- Provide technical expertise and underwriting guidance to support the strategic growth of the cyber insurance portfolio.
- Underwrite and price Cyber insurance policies for SME and mid-market clients in alignment with the company's risk appetite.
- Build and sustain strong relationships with brokers and clients, acting as a key point of contact to drive new business development.
- Partner closely with regional Business Development Managers (BDMs) to identify and onboard brokers that support the growth of the direct insurance channel.
- Utilize underwriting tools, industry data, and threat intelligence to assess cyber risks and inform sound underwriting decisions.
- Collaborate with actuarial and risk teams to refine underwriting guidelines and contribute to ongoing product development.
- Negotiate policy terms and conditions within established underwriting authority and guidelines.
- Represent the Cyber business unit at broker meetings, conferences, and industry events, offering market insights and promoting HSB's offerings.
- Structure and negotiate customized underwriting solutions tailored to client needs.
- Analyze and monitor the performance of the cyber portfolio, identifying opportunities for optimization and implementing corrective actions where necessary.
- Foster strong internal collaboration across underwriting, business development, and risk teams to support portfolio and product initiatives.
- Assist in identifying and developing new product opportunities that address evolving market demands.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business, or a related field; relevant certifications (e.g., FCIP, CPCU) are preferred.
- Bilingualism is preferred, with a focus on French language proficiency (written and spoken) for candidates located in Quebec.
- 5+ years of experience in Cyber or professional liability underwriting with a focus on new business production.
- Strong relationship management skills with experience working with brokers and regional BDMs to grow distribution channels.
- Established relationship with brokers specifically in Quebec is an asset.
- Proven ability to collaborate across departments to identify market opportunities and onboard new broker partners.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a growth mindset and a strong initiative to lead projects to completion.
