Position Overview
Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) possess a defined body of knowledge, clinical skills, procedural skills, and professional attitudes aimed at effective patient and family-centered care. They apply these competencies to collect and interpret information, make appropriate clinical decisions, and carry out therapeutic nursing interventions. In collaboration with Registered Nurses, RPNs operate within their knowledge, skill, judgment, personal expertise, the healthcare setting, and patient preferences. Their role is guided by codes of ethics and a commitment to clinical competence, characterized by up-to-date, resource-efficient clinical practice and effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
Education
- Registered Practical Nursing Diploma with current registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Current BLS certification.
- Current Medication Administration Certificate (required for RPN).
- Completion of a physical assessment course or willingness to complete within 6 months of employment.
Experience
- At least 2 years of surgical experience within the last 3 years.
- Demonstrated ability in IV initiation and venipuncture preferred.
- Knowledge of PCA and pain management is an asset.
- Knowledge of current wound-care techniques is an asset.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles required.
- Maintains competence with current practices.
- Exhibits excellence in patient-focused care.
- Possesses excellent organizational, communication, observational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a team.
- Motivated to pursue educational goals.
- Good work and attendance record required.
- Willingness to work in all areas of the Surgery Service, with skills and abilities considered.
