Hiring Unit: Microbiology and Immunology Course Title and Course Number: Molecular Microbiology Lab: MIMM 384 Estimated Number of Positions: 8 Total Hours of Work per Term: 130 per position Position Summary: Instruct second year undergraduate students in a practical course on techniques in microbiology. Teaching and supervision of the laboratory session on Wednesdays from 1:30 pm to 5:30 p.m. Supervision of a 1-hour follow-up period on Fridays, depending on the lab exercise, up to 2 hours may be shifted from Wednesday to Friday, as needed. In addition, teaching assistants will provide a specific time to respond to student questions at their discretion (e.g., office hours, emails). Teaching assistants are responsible for instructing the students on safe laboratory procedures, ensuring that they are followed and that all accidents are reported to the Laboratory Course Coordinator. Teaching assistants are also responsible for grading quizzes, laboratory reports and examinations, helping in exam invigilation and exam handling and invigilating exam reviews. Qualifications: A Teaching Assistant is a Graduate Student at the Master’s or Doctoral level, at McGill University, employed to assist a course Supervisor. Have ideally taken the course in the past. Suitable background in cell and molecular biology, bacteriology and microbial genetics. Thorough detailed instruction will be provided, teaching assistants should be familiar with the safe laboratory uses of toxic chemicals, infectious agents, and all the equipment used during the lab sessions. Language Requirements: Effective communication skills in English are essential. An effective communication skill in French is desirable.
