Hiring Unit: Microbiology and Immunology Course Title and Course Number: SEA-PHAGES: Phage Discovery: MIMM 390 Estimated Number of Positions: 2 Total Hours of Work per Term: 85 hours Position Summary: Instruct and guide 26 second- and third-year undergraduate students in the Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) course. This lab-based course focusing on bacteriophage discovery research will take place in person. Teaching assistants will demonstrate research techniques and theory in Microbiology and Virology and grade them in a variety of assessments such as participation/ performance, lab reports, lab books, flow charts, quizzes, presentations, and other assignments. Teaching assistants are expected to read the week’s material prior to the pre-lab session on Tuesdays. They will attend an in-person TA meeting with the instructor from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, then attend the lab from 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm on the same days (Tuesdays and Thursdays). TAs will be required to explain techniques and theory to the students and may be asked to proceed with short technical demonstrations. Teaching assistants are responsible for instructing the students on safe laboratory procedures. In addition, teaching assistants will respond to student questions through email or office hours and will be asked to participate or lead in some team-building exercises with their students. In the event of extraordinary circumstances beyond the University’s control, the content, schedule and/or evaluation scheme in this course is subject to change. In this case, TA duties would be adjusted accordingly. Qualifications: A Teaching Assistant is a Graduate Student at the Master’s or Doctoral level, at McGill University, employed to assist a course Supervisor. Have ideally taken the course in the past. B.Sc. or B.A. in Microbiology & Immunology, experience in a similar course Language Requirements: Effective communication skills in English are essential. An effective communication skill in French is desirable.
