Animal Health Technician Position Summary: Under the direction of the Veterinary Care Manager, the incumbent performs animal health-related duties and technical procedures related to care and use of animals. Participate in the care and well-being of animals, prepares animals, and assists in surgical procedures, administers treatment and medications, provides pre- and postoperative care, coordinates use of operating room and equipment, acts as resource person to the research community, and maintains records and equipment. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Clinical rounds: examination, monitoring, administration of medications/treatments to a variety of laboratory animals. Animal workshops: demonstrating courses on basic handling and common procedures of laboratory animals. Veterinary services: providing of a wide range of technical services to the research community, utilizing technical skills and expertise. Surgical support: preparation of animals for surgery, assistance with procedures, provision of post-operative care. Specialized areas: oversight of specialized areas such as containment level 2 housing or chemical hazards housing including orientations, access management, maintenance and husbandry. Breeding colony management: maintenance of rodent breeding colonies including mating, weaning, tissue collection for genotyping Imports/Quarantine: receiving of animals, sample collection, rederivation, recordkeeping. Recordkeeping: maintenance of records or procedures, activities, service charges, etc. Resource person: Provides guidance and support regarding best practices and refinements of procedures and use of equipment. Routine health monitoring for all species. Reviews protocol information to ensure physiological findings are in-line with experimentation expectations. Utilize Animal Management System (AMS) software for treatment data, colony management, and trend analysis. Performs euthanasia and necropsy, including the preparation of animals for surgery and provides post-operative care and monitoring of the animals. Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials, chemicals, and medicines.
