Position Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Children and Families, the Family Engagement Worker will play a vital role in supporting families focusing on providing culturally safe support for families, while also acting as a liaison between families and internal FNFAO streams of services, including advocacy, intake, youth, and wellness support teams. Rooted in First Nations values, the Family Engagement Worker promotes family unity, safety, and well-being by providing consistent, respectful, and responsive support. The role is grounded in relationship-building, traditional knowledge, and an understanding of the systemic challenges faced by First Nations families.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-on-one, in-person support to First Nations families, including assistance with completing forms, attending meeting and navigating services.
Accompany families to appointments with CFS agencies, the Court, schools, or health services, providing emotional and logistical support.
Respond to immediate needs and help families stabilize in times of crisis.
Support families in creating safety and wellness plans in collaboration with FNFAO internal staff.
Assist families in preparing for meetings with CFS workers, court appearances, or case planning discussions.
Work with the Mino-Bimaadaziwin team and assist families after children have been reunified to ensure stability, safety, and connection.
Help families access parenting supports, community programs, school reintegration services, and follow-up care.
Support the creation of healthy routines and positive communication within the home environment.
Monitor and check in with families to prevent any potential re-involvement with CFS and ensure long-term well-being.
Work with Mino-Bimaadaziwin team to maintain wraparound supports that reflect family needs and strengths.
Attend team meetings and contribute to case planning discussions.
Share observations with the team that may support broader advocacy efforts.
Maintain knowledge of local programs and supports relevant to families’ needs.
Promote the use of cultural supports, traditional parenting, and land-based or ceremony-based healing approaches.
Promote the protection and well-being of children in their home through expedient and flexible interventions.
Promote personal growth and skill development, such as problem-solving, relationship, social, parenting and coping.
Collaborate with families, schools, and community organizations to enhance service delivery.
Enhance awareness and utilization of community resources and social supports.
Maintain accurate records of interactions, progress, and outcomes for reporting purposes.
Build trusting relationships with the families, and community partners; and
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: Education & Experience
Minimum certificate, diploma or degree in a relevant Human Service field (i.e. Child and Youth Care, Criminal Justice, Rehabilitation Services, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, etc.)
Experience working with family and youth in a supportive or educational capacity
Knowledge of First Nation issues related to the child welfare and justice system, and health and social services.
Experience working with First Nation children, youth, and families.
Demonstrated problem-solving and organizational skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook.
Excellent time management skills.
Knowledge of management, organizational and planning principles.
Ability to follow office procedures and practices.
Knowledge of First Nation culture, history, and issues.
Strong organizational and time management skills
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Knowledge and experience of local Indigenous cultures and/or knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action would be considered an asset.
Valid Manitoba Driver’s License and reliable vehicle.
Evening availability as needed.
Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Clear Child Abuse Registry Check.
Must have minimum of $2-million liability on car insurance.
