Learn more at shn.ca Job Description: Geriatric Emergency Management (GEM) Registered Nurse Reporting to the Program Director of Emergency Care and the department manager, the GEM Registered Nurse (RN) will focus on comprehensive assessment, screening, monitoring and evaluation of treatment plans for complex elderly clients in the Emergency Department to achieve the main goals of GEM including but not limited to; Facilitating effective, appropriate, and safe discharge of elderly clients from Emergency Department with the referrals to necessary community partners; reducing Emergency Department recidivism and unnecessary hospital admissions, and identifying staff needs and educate/improve awareness and care for geriatric syndromes. The GEM RN will also be responsible for providing leadership and enhancing professional practice, including the development of policies and standards of care; providing consultation services to clients, nurses and other team members; promoting and facilitating research and academic activity; developing resources materials; providing supervision to students and leading program development in enhancing geriatric care for the corporation. The GEM RN will work collaboratively with other GEM nurses, community service providers, and long-term care homes to build capacity in delivering effective emergency services to the elderly clients. Required Qualifications: Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. Certificate in Gerontology Nursing or willingness to complete within 2 years CPR at Basic Cardiac Life Support level Minimum 3 years clinical experience in geriatrics, and experience in emergency services is an asset Excellent communication, negotiation, teaching and interpersonal skills with the ability to work well with clients, families and all levels of staff and the community Strong research knowledge and skills with the ability to foster same in others, and commitment to enhancing academic endeavours/involvement for self and staff Demonstrated pattern of good attendance and work record Exposure to Lean principles, an understanding of methodologies and tools and a commitment to the use of these in support of providing the best healthcare experience possible to our patients Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, and environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area Demonstrated ability to provide effective professional practice leadership. Knowledge of College of Nursing of Ontario standards of practice and standards of practice in area of specialty Exposure to Lean principles, an understanding of methodologies and tools and a commitment to the use of these in support of providing the best healthcare experience possible to our patients Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to SHN's comprehensive safety programs and practices including staff safety, patient safety, and environmental safety and participates in regular in-service education in this area.
