The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Palestinian Literature and Culture. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

The Department is seeking a scholar of modern and contemporary Palestinian cultural production with a specialization in one or more of the following fields: literature, media and visual studies, cinema studies, theatre and performance studies, and/or the fine arts. We welcome applications from interdisciplinary scholars who will integrate Palestinian studies within the fields of Arabic Studies and the Modern Middle East and enrich our programs in those areas.
Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations, or a related field. The successful candidate must be an internationally recognized scholar with a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching that is commensurate with the ranks of Associate Professor or Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Evidence of excellence in research will be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals and/or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards, as well as strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching in a degree granting program. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by strong letters of reference, teaching accomplishments and the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below).
Salary to be commensurate with qualification and experience.
The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations encompasses the interdisciplinary study of the civilizations and cultures of the Near and Middle East from Neolithic times until the present, including their archaeology, history, mythology, religion and thought, art and architecture, and language and literature (Akkadian, Ancient Egyptian, Classical and Modern Arabic, Aramaic, Coptic, Ge’ez, Hebrew, Persian, Sumerian, Syriac, and Turkish). The Department’s programs provide students with a unique opportunity to study non-Western complex societies and civilizations. It is the largest of its kind in Canada and one of the foremost research institutes devoted to the Near and Middle East in North America (https://www.nmc.utoronto.ca/).
