Job Overview: The Advanced Packaging & Integration group is looking for a candidate to fulfill the role of Hermetic Packaging Process Development Engineer to contribute to the development of their wavelength selective switch (WSS) products. WSS product development is inherently multidisciplinary, involving optics, opto-mechanics, LCOS, MEMS, Hermetic Packaging, micro-optics assembly and electronics. The successful candidate will be directly involved in the process design cycle from conceptual design, prototype builds, device characterization and optimization and transfer to high-volume production by one of our manufacturing sites. This is an opportunity to develop products that support the continued rapid growth of cloud and networking infrastructure and become part of a world class development team. What You’ll Be Doing: Develop processes for the hermetic packaging of free space optical systems in close collaboration with product/tooling designers and manufacturing partners. Innovate new hermetic sealing methods and contribute to the expansion of our process toolbox and IP portfolio. Support the products and assembly processes throughout the product life cycle from inception to volume production (involving occasional ~5% travel primarily to Asia) Contribute as a member of the broader Hermetics team lending assistance, expertise, consulting, peer review, etc. as required. What We’re Looking For Required Qualifications: Bachelor or MSc degree in Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics or other relevant engineering or physical science discipline. 5+ years of experience Theoretical and practical understanding of materials science related to optics packaging including metals, solders, glasses and adhesives Theoretical and practical knowledge of heat transfer, basic electrical circuits, and automated machinery/instruments Experience in the development of assembly processes (and associated equipment) for volume production Ability to read, interpret and define specifications/requirements in mechanical drawings Able to identify questions and unknowns relating to a process development objective and devise/execute experiments to address them Possess strong attention to detail, make data driven decisions and exhibit a strong sense of accountability relating to commitments Possess strong oral and written communication skills enabling reporting at the program level, sharing of results within the Hermetics Team and documentation of results. Desired Qualifications: Six Sigma certification or equivalent including statistical analysis/characterization of processes A practical understanding of device package design and fabrication methods and capabilities, including resistance welding, laser welding, solder sealing, Helium leak testing, glove box environment, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), 3D printers, etc. Familiarity and experience with optoelectronic development from conceptual design, vendor interaction, package prototyping, testing, and performance characterization to NPI/volume production. Software development experience – any language. Experience with CAD software (SolidEdge, SolidWorks, or equivalent) Experience with basic machine shop tools is an asset (mill, lathe, drill press etc.) Familiarity with the reliability requirements and test methods of the Telecom Industry.
