The Division of General Surgery in the Sprott Department of Surgery at the University Health Network and the University of Toronto is inviting applications for the position of an Academic Acute Care Surgeon. This appointment is for a full-time faculty position in the Division of General Surgery at University Health Network. The potential start date of this position is April 1, 2026.
The Division of General Surgery is seeking a highly motivated and academically driven Surgeon Investigator with a clinical focus in Acute Care Surgery. The successful candidate will be expected to provide comprehensive clinical care in Acute Care General Surgery, including participation in the division’s on-call schedule for emergency general surgery coverage. Responsibilities also include holding regular outpatient clinics to support continuity of care for surgical patients. The candidate will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and be actively engaged in supporting high-quality, patient-centred care. There is no anticipation to be future opportunities for elective surgical care in this role.
The candidate will lead innovative research and educational initiatives that advance the field of Acute Care Surgery.
The candidate must be eligible for an appointment at the academic rank of Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. They must hold an MD degree, and certification in General Surgery from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the individual must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or its equivalent, and must hold, or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. All candidates must be proficient in English. The candidate must have completed a residency program in General Surgery as well as an Acute Care Fellowship, (or equivalent). The candidate’s application should demonstrate outstanding technical skills, the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and to teach trainees at all levels.
Research interests may include surgical education, quality improvement, innovation and/or surgical outcomes. Additionally, evidence of productivity, distinction, and the potential to become an international leader is essential. We seek candidates who want to be a part of building a strong ACS service within our hospital system.
Start-up educational support and mentoring will be provided. Starting salary will be between the range of $500,000.00 - $600,000.00 (CAD) and commensurate with qualifications and experience. This estimate is based on fee-for-service billings and the support from the University Health Network Division of General Surgery Associate Practice plan.
