The Department of Pediatric Emergency Medicine in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Clinical Research Fellowship.
Job Description:
This fellowship is supported by a One Child Every Child (OCEC) Clinical Transformative Excellence Award. One Child Every Child is a Canada-first research and translation initiative funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, with a vision for all Canadian children to be the healthiest, most empowered and thriving in the world. Led by the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute at the University of Calgary, One Child Every Child brings together Indigenous partners, Canada's child health research institutes, equity-deserving communities, local and national partners as well as global collaborators to dramatically improve the lives of children across Canada and beyond.

The successful candidate would become an integral member of the Pediatric Emergency Research Team (PERT - https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/research/pediatric-emergency-research-team ). The PERT team includes 9 physician principal investigators who have unique areas of focus and methodologic expertise. The team is well resourced with 4 research nurses, 21 research assistants, and a 50-member volunteer research program. The team supports researchers from all sections across ACH and ACHRI, enabling them to recruit patients in the ED and numerous other clinics. The team is recognized as the preeminent program in the country and is a leader in the Pediatric Emergency Research Canada (PERC) network (https://perc-canada.ca/)
enabling ACH to both lead and participate in national research initiatives.
The team includes Dr. Stephen Freedman, the ACHF Professor in Child Health and Wellness who brings expertise to the team as the Associate Dean, Clinical Trials for Cumming School of Medicine. He is the past-Chair of PERC and a member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He is supported by Dr. Graham Thompson, Program Director, Care Transformation for Children who has expertise in sepsis, and Dr. Mohamed Eltorki, an early career researcher with expertise in pain trials. Other PERT members have expertise in quality improvement, education research, health service research, the patient experience; and eSimulation. The collective expertise and interests of this group enable trainees to embark and excel in the conduct of research
across methodologies and topics.
The overall aim of this fellowship is to prepare Pediatric Emergency Physicians for an academic career as a clinician researcher with an emphasis on fostering a new generation of transdisciplinary child health and wellness researchers.
Clinical research fellows recruited through the Clinical Transformative Excellence Awards stream should be physicians who have completed fellowship and are interested in pursuing a career as clinical researchers. Support will be provided to pursue advanced training in biostatistics and epidemiology.
Qualifications:
Qualifications include an MD or equivalent, certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Pediatrics and/or Emergency Medicine, or equivalent certification from another professional association, and the completion of a fellowship in PEM. Candidates must be eligible for an Independent Practice Permit from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and for medical staff privileges from Alberta Health Services. They must read, write, and speak English. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and Permanent Residents will be given priority.
Fellows in good standing may be eligible to apply for a second year of funding.
Program Structure
- There are no clinical care requirements associated with this position but selected applicants may work up to a maximum of 30% of an FTE (i.e., 1 shift per week) as an
attending physician in the Alberta Children Hospital emergency department and renumeration would be provided in accordance with fee for service billings.
Required Academic Activities
- Fellows must participate in OCEC's transdisciplinary training activities, including courses, workshops, and professional development opportunities. Fellows are also expected to participate in and present at the OCEC Scholar Research Symposium, along with other relevant Child Health and Wellness research symposia, retreats, and educational activities organized by OCEC.
- Fellows will be expected to generate a research proposal, apply for suitable funding, apply for research ethics, and initiate a research project.
- Fellows must fulfill all reporting and evaluation requirements associated with the award, including submitting regular progress updates.
- Fellows must acknowledge OCEC in all publications, presentations, communications, and marketing materials associated with their research project(s).

One reference should focus on the applicant's skills and aptitude for a research career and the second reference should be a clinical reference for the practice of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Applicants must also provide a copy of their Pediatric Emergency Medicine Credentials or an attestation from their current PEM program director outlining their expected date of program completion.
