The Student Success Centre in Student Experience and Support is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Wellbeing Support Advisor for approximately 11 months.
The Student Success Centre (SSC) offers inclusive advising and academic support services to enhance students academic skills, support their academic wayfinding and attain their individual academic goals. We welcome prospective, open studies, undergraduate and graduate students. We strive to offer student-centered resources and be a place where students can ask questions and learn more about strategies and resources that support their learning and university success.
Reporting to the Director, Student Success Centre, the Wellbeing Student Advisor works in collaboration with the First-Generation Student Support team in the Student Success Centre to provide individual and group holistic wellbeing supports to prospective, current and open studies first-generation students (i.e., students whose guardians, parents or chosen family have not attended post-secondary. This role will provide coordinated care to students by supporting access to campus community and external resources related to life circumstances and health concerns that may arise and have the potential to pose barriers students academic and personal wellbeing. In addition to engaging students with mental health resources, the Wellbeing Student Advisor will offer support in areas related to food security, housing, financial, sexual violence and inclusion concerns by liaising with various services and faculties to facilitate students access to relevant supports and navigation of university processes. The Wellbeing Support Advisor provides leadership by intervening and consulting when students are experiencing personal and academic challenges and engaging with first-generation students on an outreach basis to offer programs and events to promote student personal and academic wellbeing.
This position works within an inter-professional model to engage multiple professions to collaborate in creating and promoting a healthy university community. The Wellbeing Support Advisor may also provide intake support for First-Generation students presenting in crisis in need of immediate mental health assessment. This position is responsible for building connections and facilitating referrals between students, university and community resources and promoting intercultural wellbeing literacy. In addition to the roles focus on wellbeing programming and support, in collaboration with the first-generation team, the position contributes to all aspects of the first-generation mentorship program including mentor/ mentee recruitment, training, outreach and event planning. This is a unionized position working 35 hours a week, Monday to Friday, including early evenings, with occasional requirement to work outside of regular hours.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Wellbeing Support Advising
- Engage individual first-generation students in appointments that foster a warm and supportive atmosphere and focus on developing a wellbeing plan to support personal and academic success.
- Provide accurate and relevant referral information to students based on presenting concerns along with tailored support to aid in accessing and engaging with various services.
- Provide mental health triage and assess the needs and level of risk of students with the intent of providing appropriate service/referral and reducing barriers to additional on-campus mental health supports.
- Work collaboratively with other members of the Student-at-Risk team and Student Wellness Services staff.
- Assess emergent nature of intakes and prioritize appointments accordingly.
- Maintains student files according to protocol and ensures files are updated in a timely, thorough and ethical manner.
- Ensure all analysis and reporting efforts are compliant with university processes, FOIP and the Health Information Act.
Program Development and Promotion
- Liaise with Student Wellness Services and the Student Success Centre teams to design and implement programming for first-generation students on holistic topics related to students personal wellbeing to promote wellbeing literacy.
- Ensure broad consultation with students and communities regarding programs and delivery as well as currency in intercultural and diversity issues in all programming considerations.
- Support the development of promotional materials for programming as well as assessment of program outcomes.
- In collaboration with the first-generation team, participate in all aspects of the First-Generation Mentorship Program including recruitment, training, outreach and program and event planning.
Collaboration
- Collaborates with faculty partners regarding student concerns.
- Participates in committees and working groups relating to student success and wellbeing and contributes to broader conversations on supporting first-generation students experience.
- Participates in cross-training to assist in other areas when needed and to meet Student Success Centre priorities.
- Identifies professional development needs and skill priorities; continues own personal development, learning and training. Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Masters degree in social work or related field and 2-3 years experience in mental health.
- A combination of education and work experience may also be considered.
- Experience with crisis intervention, suicide intervention training and at-risk student behaviors.
- Experience developing collaborative program delivery and designing and facilitating engaging and inclusive group learning experiences.
- Experience successfully handling a large student caseload with a positive student-centric attitude in a highly collaborative environment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a commitment to a collegial and inclusive work style.
- Strong working knowledge of post-secondary student experience and needs across various students intersectional identities.
- Demonstrated strong regard for issues of confidentiality and dealing with highly sensitive material.
- Proven ability to work effectively with multiple departments, organizations and people in sensitive and complex situations.
