Your opportunity:
Under the general direction of the Director of Finance and Facilities, the Financial Officer will support business services at the Faculty of Law by applying sound financial principles and practices in the provision of financial and HRIS administration. The Financial Officer is responsible for a broad range of HR and payroll activities in HRIS for faculty, staff and casuals in accordance with the University’s practices and procedures and additional local guidelines and agreements. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for inputting the day to day financial transactions into FIS. The Financial Officer also acts as a backup support to other financial roles within the portfolio as required.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Advising staff on accounting practices and University financial policies and procedures
- Forecasting and planning financial activities incorporating budgets with multiple sources of revenue and/or recoveries
- Monitoring department budget to ensure expenditures remain within budgeted allocations
- Recording detailed transactions for many accounts including payroll
- Monitoring, recording, reconciling and/or reporting on funding accounts for grants and contracts
- Identifying and resolving individual financial discrepancies
- Generating standard financial reports
- Verifying that HRIS transactions are processed according to applicable policies, procedures, collective agreements, and applicable legislated requirements
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Business or Accounting and/or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience
- Minimum of four years of recent experience in processing payroll, account monitoring/ reconciliations, conducting financial analysis, and preparation of financial reports, preferably within a post-secondary or SAP environment
- Demonstrated experience identifying and resolving individual financial discrepancies
- Demonstrated experience researching, compiling, investigating, interpreting, and analyzing financial information as well as making recommendations based on findings
- Experience with forecasting and monitoring budgets to ensure expenditures remain within budgeted allocations
- Experience working with complex statistical information, analyzing financial data and producing financial reports
- Demonstrated Knowledge and experience working with SAP systems, including Financial Information Systems (FIS), Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), and Research Information Systems (RIS) or comparable financial systems
- Experience communicating financial information to non-financial staff at all levels
- Advanced computer skills with a high level of proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Excellent knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, collective agreements, or other related financial policies and procedures is required.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities/deadlines
- Strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)
- Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills
- Exceptional time management skills with the ability to handle large volumes of work in a fast paced environment
