Job Category: Faculty - Tenure Stream (continuing)
Faculty/Division: University of Toronto Scarborough
Department: University of Toronto Scarborough: Department of Heath & Society
Campus: University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC)
Description:
The Department of Health and Society (DHS) and the Canada Excellence Research Chair Network for Equity in Sustainability Transitions (CERC NEST) at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) invite applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Climate and Community Health Equity. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
The CERC NEST uses a transdisciplinary, comparative and action-centred approach with communities and city actors in Toronto and internationally to examine how to enhance participation in decision-making, address inequities in regulations and investments, and ensure fair distribution of benefits, livability and a good life for all.
Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, such as Sociology, Statistics, Toxicology, Public Health, Public Policy, Rehabilitation Science, Sustainability, or a related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and broaden our existing departmental strengths, dovetail with CERC NEST research vision and methodologies, and enhance the campus strengths and priorities.
The successful candidate will have research experience relevant to sustainability transitions by focusing on the human health implications of climate-related stressors, such as extreme heat, air pollution, water and food insecurity, and their intersection with questions of climate, equity, justice, public health action, and community resilience. Grounded in the CERC-NEST goal of co-producing knowledge to foster equity in sustainability transitions, this hire will take an integrated approach to community health equity, encompassing restorative and cosmopolitan justice, by acknowledging the significance of relational and historical injustices, embracing local knowledge and diverse cultural understandings, and fostering long-standing community partnerships. As such, this hire will support communities in defining their futures, articulating the problems and solutions most relevant to their lived experiences. A research portfolio focusing on a deeper understanding of how energy use and climate interact with community health equity, sustainability and resilience is required, as these interactions are shaped by the social and environmental conditions in which people live, work, and play. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent interdisciplinary research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated capacity to teach a range of courses in areas such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, community health equity, and sustainability, as well as community-based health and social care, aging across the life course, Canadian healthcare policy, interprofessional healthcare, or assessment of healthcare systems. Experience in curriculum or course development will be considered an asset.
Strong professional, research, and academic networks would be a definite asset. The successful candidate is expected to establish strong connections between DHS, the CERC NEST, and the new Scarborough Academy of Medicine and Integrated Health (SAMIH).
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, communication strategies that are accessible to the populations that the research is intended to benefit, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, the submitted research statement, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.
Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments, and the teaching dossier, including a strong teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters.
Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose research, teaching and service bear out our commitment to equity. Candidates must also show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and to the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment, as demonstrated through the application materials. Candidates are asked to submit a 1-2 page statement of contributions to equity and diversity, which might cover topics such as (but not limited to): research or teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of students from underrepresented groups.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
