The Department of Social Justice Education (SJE) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Indigenous Studies and Social Justice Education. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.
Applicants must have earned a PhD, EdD, or equivalent doctoral degree with a focus on Indigenous Studies and Education or a closely related field by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.
Preference will be given to candidates who self-identify as Indigenous. Recognizing that there are a variety of terms that potential candidates may use to self-identify, the University uses the term “Indigenous” in this search, which forms part of the U of T Response to Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to encompass the people of Turtle Island, including those who identify as First Nations, Métis, Inuk (Inuit), Alaska Native, Native American, and Native Hawaiian people. Candidates who self-identify as Indigenous to other parts of the world should clarify their relationship to specific Indigenous communities.
We seek to recruit a scholar with a demonstrated research expertise and teaching interests in Indigenous Studies in relation to Social Justice Education, with a focus on decolonial and anti-racist practice. We welcome applicants whose work in Indigenous Studies is grounded on and accountable to specific places and communities, particularly those located on Turtle Island. We are interested in applicants whose work focuses on one or more of the following: decolonization, sovereignty, Indigenous feminisms, ecology, land stewardship, Indigenous social and political movements on Turtle Island, the Abya-Yala (a.k.a. The Americas), and/or global Indigeneities and solidarities. Applicants must demonstrate how their work in one ore more of these areas engages education and educational research, broadly conceived, including out-of-school contexts, and in relation to Indigenous lands, waters, and life.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and/or field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees.
Evidence of excellence in teaching at the university level is required, as demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, strong letters of reference, and the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application.
The successful candidate will be committed to the academic success of all our students and foster an environment that acknowledges, encourages, and celebrates diversity and difference. Responsibilities of the position include teaching and supervising a diverse body of students in SJE’s graduate degree programs, service to SJE and to OISE, and working collaboratively with related units across OISE and the University of Toronto. It is expected that the successful candidate will work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in diverse and inclusive settings.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The Department of Social Justice Education offers MA, MEd, PhD, and EdD degrees in Social Justice Education in addition to participating in several collaborative specializations. Social Justice Education has nurtured expansive conversations in critical education taking place across the globe.
